Discover the Changes Made to the Lips Thanks to Lip Fillers

Lip fillers have grown in popularity over the last few years as people try to copy the look of celebrities on the red carpet. Patients are often looking to try and rejuvenate the appearance of their lips and have a more youthful appearance.

There is some confusion surrounding the use of lip fillers. While they provide natural looking results when injected by a person experienced in the treatment, many people worry that their lips might look overfilled or unnatural due to too much filler being placed in the lips.

Cosmetic Town TV is here to provide the answers desired by patients with a Procedure 411 on lip fillers:

What are Lip Fillers?

Lip fillers are an injectable material that can provide a look to the lips that is fuller and rejuvenated. Lip fillers vary in the length of their results as well as their density.

In general, fillers can be categorized as temporary, semi-permanent and permanent. Lip fillers come in many forms and they include:

  • Collagen-based lip fillers (human-derived collagen or bovine-derived collagen)
  • Hyaluronic acid fillers (a substance that naturally occurs in the human body)
  • Fat transfer to the lips (fat that is removed from one area of the body and is then transferred to the lips)

The process of getting lip fillers takes anywhere from 30-60 minutes. The fillers can be injected all at once or they can be gradually injected over a series of several session. Injecting the fillers over a series of sessions helps to ensure balance and symmetry with the final results.

The cost depends on the type of filler used and the amount administered by the doctor. The cost of injected filler can run anywhere from $750-$1200 per syringe while fat injections are in the range of $5000-$11,000.

Ideal Lip Filler Candidates

When it comes to candidates for lip fillers, ideal candidates include patients that want lips that are plumper or shapely in appearance. In addition, patient with lips that are naturally thin or thin due to the aging process are also good candidates. Patients with wrinkles around the mouth are also good candidates as lip fillers can help reduce the appearance of wrinkles.

In general, patients should be over the age of 18 and have realistic expectations about the final results.

Cosmetic Town News reached out to Erika Barry, NP-C, MSN, BSN. She is an aesthetics injector and is also a well-known Instagram influencer that runs an IG account known as “Botox Bunny”. We asked Barry about how she makes the lip filler process easier for first time patients. According to Barry, “I love starting with a lip flip (just 4-10 units of Botox or Xeomin) to lift the top lift because this increases the volume of the top lip...especially while smiling. If patients are positive with the results and want more volume in the lip, I start with a half syringe of Volbella because it adds just a pout of volume without looking ‘ducky’ or fake.

She also stressed the importance of having a game plan for patients so they will have a better idea about the process. “I like to make a timeline for patients so they will know how long the swelling and bruising will last as well as the cost of the treatment. We discuss their medical history for any past history of cold sores or infections to prevent them from happening again.”

“In addition, they need to know what can be accomplished with the procedure so they will have realistic expectations about the final results. We look at various ‘before and after’ photos so they will have a visual roadmap. I encourage them to bring in celebrity photos AKA their “lip muse” so I can get a better idea of what they hope to accomplish.”

Lip Filler Recovery, Results and Limitations

The recovery process for lip fillers is not too difficult. Ice packs should be used for 24-48 hours to ease swelling and discomfort. There will be some numbness and redness as well but these conditions will naturally resolve.

There will be immediate volume seen after getting the injections. The results become more visible once the swelling goes down. The length of the results depends on how quickly the body of the patient breaks the filler components down. Collagen filler usually lasts 4-6 months while hyaluronic acid filler lasts 6-18 months. Fat transfer to the lips can last anywhere from 6-12 months.

The results can also last longer if the patient does not wait until the product is completely dissolved before having additional treatments. The duration between lip filler treatments will be determined by the doctor in order to avoid results that are unnatural in appearance.

The main limitation of lip fillers is that the proper aesthetic proportion of the upper lip should be no more than 75\\% of the lower lip volume. Anyone that has overfilled lips will not enjoy natural looking results. The skill of the doctor has a lot to do with the final results having an overfilled or natural look so this can also be a limitation of the procedure.

When lip fillers are injected by an experienced and highly trained cosmetic physician, the results can provide greater self-confidence and a better self-image. The first step is scheduling a consultation appointment so the cosmetic physician can examine the patient and discuss the desired final results. The medical professional can set realistic expectations so the patient will not be surprised or disappointed with the final results of the injections. Once the decision has been made to have a lip filler treatment, the doctor will discuss the filler options with the patient in order to determine the best technique to achieve the desired results.
