Lip Fillers

Lip fillers enhance the size and shape of the lips. They are usually made with hyaluronic acid which is a natural substance found in the body. Filler is injected into the lips to enhance their shape and volume. The doctor marks the area to be treated and use fine needles to inject the filler. The doctor will massage the treated region to smooth out any bumps and create a natural appearance. Collagen filler injections are rarely used as they require skin testing since the collagen is typically derived from cow protein. Fat grafting requires liposuction in order to remove fat from the body of the patient. The fat is then re-injected into the lips.

Ideal candidates for lip fillers include anyone who wishes to have fuller lips or a better lip proportion. Patients with very thin lips due to aging or genetics are good candidates. In addition, women who want a pouty lip appearance or a person who desires a better contour to their cupid’s bow are good candidates. Lip filler candidates also include men or women who do not want to undergo lip implant surgery.

The cost of lip fillers varies by the type of filler used, fees charged by the doctor or the facility, the area of the country where the treatment is performed and how much filler is necessary to gain the desired outcome. The amount of filler matters because the filler is priced per syringe. In general, the cost per syringe is $600-$900.

Lip fillers have little downtime after they are injected. There will be some redness, swelling, tenderness and bruising but these conditions will not last very long. Patients will see fuller lips, with a better contour, right after an injection. Lip filler results last between 3 to 6 to 12 months depending on the type of filler used and the amount of filler injected. The body naturally absorbs the material so repeat injections are necessary to maintain the results. Fat grafting is considered a permanent treatment so only one treatment is usually necessary. It should be noted that, as a person ages, volume loss continues to occur and the lips can become thin once again.
