Liposuction - The 411 on this Cosmetic Beauty Procedure

All the details on liposuction

Patients that have stubborn fat on the body can get frustrated if the fat does not respond to proper diet and exercise. In order to get rid of the fat, they often turn to liposuction to permanently get rid of the stubborn fat as well as provide a greater shape and contour to the body.

What is Liposuction?

Liposuction reshapes the body by breaking up fat cells that are located in the targeted area. Once the fat cells are broken apart, they are removed from the body by the surgeon or they are naturally excreted from the body of the patient.

Liposuction is a very popular cosmetic procedure and Cosmetic Town TV recently shared the 411 on everything related to liposuction:

Cosmetic Liposuction Techniques

Liposuction can performed using a number of techniques:

  • Traditional Liposuction – The surgeon will insert a cannula, AKA a thin tube, through an incision made in the skin of the patient. The doctor then manipulates the cannula in order to break apart the stubborn fat while also injecting fluid into the area being treated. Once the fat is ready to be removed, it is removed from the body of the patient using the cannula.
  • Laser Liposuction – This is a technique that is also known as liposculpture. It uses laser energy to break apart fat cells before they are removed using a cannula.
  • Tumescent Liposuction – This liposuction method is performed much like traditional liposuction. The main difference is that the surgeon specifically injects a solution that is made of lidocaine, salt solution and epinephrine into the targeted area of fat. In general, the amount of fluid injected into the patient is usually three times the amount of fat that is targeted to be removed by the surgeon.
  • Ultrasonic-Assisted Liposuction (UAL) – This is a liposuction methods that liquefies the fat of the patient through the use of ultrasonic waves.
  • CoolLipo – A minimally invasive method designed to remove fat from areas of the body that are more sensitive such as the neck, chin, arms and jowls. A laser is used to break apart fat cells in the areas that are targeted by the surgeon.
  • SlimLipo – This technique uses a laser to melt fat cells in the targeted areas.

Ideal Cosmetic Liposuction Candidates

When it comes to liposuction candidates, there are several factors that make a patient an ideal candidate:

  • Men or women within 25\\% of their ideal weight
  • Patients that have small pockets of fat that remain resistant to traditional exercise and diet
  • Patients with skin that is firm and elastic
  • Someone with good muscle tone

Although liposuction does help remove excess fat from the body of a patient, liposuction weight loss is not the final result of the procedure. Liposuction is not a weight loss procedure so patients need to have realistic expectations before making the final decision to have the procedure.

Liposuction Recovery and Cost

The cost to get liposuction depends on the type of liposuction performed, the amount of fat that is removed, the number of treatments performed and the area of the country where the cosmetic liposuction takes place. In general, the cost is anywhere from $3000-$10,000 per patient. This cost does not include any fees charged by the doctor or the facility as well as the price charged for anesthesia.

Liposuction recovery is relatively the same for any of the cosmetic liposuction techniques listed above. There will be some swelling, bruising and soreness for a few weeks following the procedure. The total liposuction recovery time depends on the amount of fat removed as well as the number of areas treated on the body.  A compression garment worn by the patient will help to control any swelling.

Overall, patients can return to light work a few days after having liposuction. Normal activities can be resumed within two to three weeks.

Liposuction Results

Liposuction results vary according to the type of liposuction performed by the surgeon. Once the majority of the swelling goes down, patients will begin to see some results. In general, the final results will be visible after six to nine months. The targeted fat cells are permanently removed from the area where the cosmetic liposuction is performed. However, fat can continue to grow in the areas that surround the areas treated by the surgeon.

Making the Decision to Undergo Liposuction

The decision about which type of liposuction cosmetic surgery to undergo should not be made until the patient schedules a consultation appointment with a surgeon. The doctor will discuss the results with the patient in order to determine the best technique to achieve the desired final results. The patient should also ask to see “before and after” photos of actual patients treated by the doctor in order to view the type of natural results provided by the surgeon that will last a lifetime.
