Liposculpture is performed to get rid of excess fat on areas of the body that do not respond to diet and exercise. The fat cells are permanently removed but it is not a weight loss procedure. The fat is removed through the use of a micro-cannula which is a thin instrument that is straw-like. The micro-cannula is attached to an aspirator machine and is inserted into small incisions to dislodge the fat located under the skin. The aspirator suctions the fat out of the body and then an elastic garment is worn to compress the skin and provide a better contour to the treated area.

Ideal candidates are people with areas of fat on the body that do not respond well to traditional diet and exercise. In addition, patients should be at, or near, their ideal body weight as this is not intended for use as a weight loss procedure. Patients should need some help shaping and tightening areas of the body.

The cost of liposculpture depends on the amount of fat removed by the doctor, the number of areas treated, any doctor or surgical fees and the area of the country where it is performed. In general, the cost is anywhere from $3000-$10,000.

The results of liposculpture are visible immediately after the procedure. There will be some swelling and bruising that can prevent the results from being completely visible for 3 or 4 months. Once the skin finishes the tightening process, the results will be visible to anyone. The fat that is removed will not come back. However, a healthy diet and exercise are necessary to keep additional fat from growing around the treated area.
