FUT Hair Transplant

Follicular unit transplantation, AKA FUT or strip hair transplant is when hair is harvested from its natural grouping on the donor area (back of the head). The hair is moved to an area on the scalp that is thinning or balding. This technique leaves a scar on the back of the head that can be hidden by long hair. A narrow strip of hair is trimmed and the surgeon cuts a scalp strip from the back of the head (where the hair is trimmed). The hair follicles in the strip are dissected in their natural grouping. Tiny incisions are made at the recipient site so the grafts can be implanted. A hairline is made using single grafts and fullness is made in the back with larger grafts.

Ideal candidates include patients with balding on the scalp due to male pattern baldness or other forms of hair loss. Candidates can also include patients with hair loss due to trauma to the scalp and anyone that is not planning to cut or shave their hair on the donor area.

The total cost depends on the number of grafts used by the surgeon as well as the cost per graft. The price can also vary due to fees charged by the doctor or the facility and the area of the country where the procedure is performed. Overall, the cost is anywhere from $5000-$20,000.

Patients may see some redness and swelling for a few days on the forehead and around the eyes. Normal activities can be resumed after two or three days. The transplanted hair will fall out after two to four weeks but will start to grow again a few months later. Patients will begin to see significant hair growth with six months and the final results can be seen within nine to twelve months. The new hair that grows after the hair transplant will be permanent.
