Jane Fonda Refuses to Discuss Plastic Surgery with Megyn Kelly

Did the temperature just go down in the Megyn Kelly TODAY studio?

Viewers might have shivered a bit Wednesday when Kelly, in her first week hosting the NBC morning show, asked Jane Fonda about plastic surgery she's had done. From the stone-cold look on Fonda's face, she certainly didn't think the host was asking about aging gracefully.

Here's how it went down when Kelly, 46, broached the topic with Fonda, 79, who was appearing with Robert Redford, 81, to promote their new film, Our Souls at Night

Kelly: "You’ve been an example to everyone in how to age beautifully and with strength and unapologetically. You admit you’ve had work done, which I think is to your credit. But you look amazing … I read you said you felt not proud to admit you had work done. Why not?"

Fonda, after a long stare as Kelly asked her question, appeared incredulous: "We really want to talk about that now?"

Kelly returned with a compliment: "One of the things people think about when they look at you is how amazing you look."

Fonda responded: "Well, thanks. Good attitude, good posture, take care of myself.  But let me tell you why I love this movie that we did, Our Souls at Night, (pause) rather than plastic surgery."

That elicited a knowing laugh from co-star Redford, who said to Fonda: "You're bringing it back to that, huh?"

Fonda then steered the conversation into a discussion of her character, Addie, but it may be hard to remember the details of what she said after the preceding back-and-forth.

Fonda later told Entertainment Tonight Canada she was "a little bit" shocked by Kelly's plastic surgery question. “Given the fact that we don’t have a lot of time and Bob is right here, it’s a weird thing to bring up — whether I’ve had plastic surgery or not," said the star. "I have and I’ve talked about it. Seemed like the wrong time and place to ask that question.”

Redford chimed in, too. "I think Jane didn’t want to go there," he said. "I think she didn’t want to have the show turn into about her, her surgery or her look. It was about the quality of the performance. I wasn’t paying a lot of attention.”
