Belly Button Shaping Cosmetic Surgery Craze

Posted March 01, 2018

According to Allure Magazine, belly button surgery is the hottest surgery trend for 2018 as many people are eager to copy the “hooded oval” belly button shape of celebrities such as actress and model Emily Ratajkowski. Belly button surgery, AKA umbilicoplasty, helps folks have “outies” when they’d rather an “innie” as well as others who feel that pregnancy has left their belly buttons less tight than it was in the past. There are other people who want to emulate Jessica Simpson's naval in the “Dukes of Hazzard” movie.

In general, the ideal belly button is an oval shape that's vertically-oriented as it makes the torso look longer and the abs leaner. The people that want an "innie" belly button are looking for a conclave navel that is slightly hooded. Many seek out the surgery to get rid of excess skin following weight loss.

Belly Button Surgeon Explained

Umbilicoplasty is a surgery that changes the size or shape of the belly button. This type of surgery is particularly popular with those whose belly buttons have been stretched by getting a piercing or after they’ve had a baby. Umbilicoplasty is a precise procedure carried out specifically to change the appearance of the belly button. The procedure was originally used to treat umbilical hernias in infants. The main reason a lot of individuals go through with umbilicoplasty is to give the belly button a more vertical shape instead of a horizontal one.

Following pregnancy, it is a common occurrence for the shape of the belly button to change. While pregnant, the belly button might seem stretched in appearance. After the pregnancy, the belly button might become shorter and wider than it did before the pregnancy. In some cases, the tissue in the belly button fuses together as the body heals after pregnancy resulting in a protruding belly button.

In some cases, an old belly button piercing can leave a scar that distorts the appearance of the belly button. In cases where the scar is located on the small ring of skin surrounding, or in the indentation of, the belly button, umbilicoplasty may be an effective option. If the scar is anywhere else, including slightly above the belly button, a scar revision procedure might be a better option. A scar revision procedure usually involves using topical treatments or surgery to reduce the appearance of a scar. These procedures are often less expensive and invasive than umbilicoplasty.

How Belly Button Shaping is performed

An umbilicoplasty is a relatively simple procedure. It begins with the application of a local or general anesthetic agent (depending on the extent of the procedure). Next, any extra skin surrounding the belly button will be removed. Depending on the desired results, the angles may be trimmed to appear either higher or lower than they did before the procedure. Once the procedure is complete, dissolvable stitches will be used to hold the skin in place while the belly button heals. The entire procedure should take less than an hour.

Belly Button Shaping Recovery

After the procedure, patients will most likely be able to go home though a little pain and discomfort may be experienced. The recovery period following umbilicoplasty is fairly short. In most cases, patients are able to return to work in a day or two but it is advisable that patients refrain from strenuous activities for at least two weeks. To ensure a smooth recovery and the best results, patients are advised to take any prescribed medication as directed. Post-op, keep the belly button area clean and dry and, if dissolvable stitches are used, they need to be removed about 7 to 10 days after surgery.

Belly Button Shaping Risks

While anesthesia is generally safe, it can increase the risk of developing blood clots in patients with an underlying medical condition like diabetes or high blood pressure. Following the procedure, there is also the risk of infection or excessive bleeding. In addition, umbilicoplasty procedures can leave scars so it’s important to weigh the risks and benefits of the procedure.

Alternative Belly Button Procedure

Umbilical hernia repair surgery changes an outie into an innie. The procedure is more commonly used on people whose previously innie belly buttons have popped out. However, more people are getting it done for purely cosmetic reasons. The surgeon makes a small cut at the base of the belly button before pushing the fatty lump back into the abdomen.  The surgeon then strengthens the abdominal wall that allowed the hernia to pop through by sticking the layers of muscle together with a special patch made from mesh.

Umbilical hernias doesn’t always require surgical repair. Surgery is needed when the hernia causes pain as well as if it is larger than half an inch or it is strangulated

Umbilical hernia repair surgery can be done in two different ways

  • Open hernia repair is when the surgeon makes an incision near the belly button to access the hernia over the bulge site.
  • Laparoscopic hernia repair is when the surgeon makes several smaller incisions around the hernia bulge site. A long thin tube is inserted with a lighted camera on its end into one of the incisions. This instrument is called a laparoscope and it allows the surgeon to see inside the abdominal cavity on a video screen.

With both procedures, recovery time is minimal. As with all surgeries, there are risks of infection and scarring so surgery shouldn’t be entered into lightly.
