What is Otoplasty?

Otoplasty is a cosmetic surgery that is designed to improve the position, size and shape of the ears. It can normally be performed during the first few weeks of life for a baby. It is also often performed when a person reaches the ages of 5 or 6 years old because, by the time a person reaches that age range, the ears have developed to within 80-90\\\% of their adult size.

Cosmetic ear surgery is a surgical method of addressing issues that pertain to the ears such as:

  • Ears that have been misshapen or injured due to an injury or trauma
  • Ears that are viewed as protruding or being overly large
  • Defects in the ear structure that have been an issue since the moment of birth

Otoplasty has also been called ear pinning and is performed to reshape one or both of the ears. It can also be performed in order to reduce the size of the ears/earlobes as well as remove any excess cartilage or skin in the targeted area. The results are ears that are not as misshapen or prominent in their appearance. Thanks to the surgeon cutting out the cartilage, or folding and then stitching the cartilage of the ear, the ears can be reshaped to a new contour.

If the surgeon decides to cut the cartilage, or fold and stitch the cartilage, a small cut is made at the back of the ear in order to better access the cartilage. Otoplasty can be performed on only one of the ears. If it is performed on both of the ears, the procedure is known as a bilateral otoplasty. Either way, the surgery removes unwanted cartilage and skin in order to provide a natural look where the ears are smaller in appearance.

How Much Does Otoplasty Cost?

The cost of otoplasty surgery is anywhere from $3000-$7000. This price does not include any fees charged by the hospital or the surgeon and it also does not include any fees for anesthesia. The price also varies according to the technique performed by the surgeon, the area of the country where the surgery is performed and the amount of work performed by the doctor.

Otoplasty Results

There will be some bruising and swelling after the surgery. In general, there will be some visible results after two or three weeks. Overall, it takes about twelve months for the final results to be visible. Once the final results are achieved, they should last a lifetime.

Choosing an Otoplasty Surgeon in San Francisco

San Francisco is a popular destination for otoplasty thanks to the large number of board-certified doctors skilled and experienced in providing natural looking results to patients. You should conduct research into your doctor of choice by looking at the website of the surgeon and reading reviews from actual patients. Once you decide on a doctor, schedule a consultation appointment with the surgeon. The doctor will perform a thorough examination as well as discuss the desired final results with you.  The surgeon will consider the final results that you have in mind in order to determine the best technique to achieve the desired appearance. It is important that you and the doctor are both on the same page when it comes to the final results. If both of you agree with the results that can be accomplished with otoplasty, there is less of a chance you will be disappointed by the final results.
