Male Breast Reduction

Many men are embarrassed by the breast-like appearance of their pectoral area, AKA “man boobs”. The condition is known as gynecomastia and it is a swelling of the breast tissue caused by a hormonal imbalance. If the problem is a case of excess fat, liposuction is likely the best option. If there is a glandular component to the problem, the surgeon will open up the patient’s nipple to remove a chunk of hard glands. Once the opening is made, liposuction is performed to remove excess fat in the area. If there is an exorbitant amount of skin, the surgeon will remove the excess skin, gland tissue and fat and salvage the nipple as a skin graft. It will be re-grafted onto the desired location.

Ideal candidates for the procedure includes men who feel uncomfortable because of their large breast tissue. Men that are embarrassed to take their shirt off in public because they are unhappy with their feminine looking breast contours are good candidates. In addition, patients should have firm skin that is toned and will react well to the glandular removal process. Finally, men looking to increase their self-confidence with a more masculine appearance are good candidates.

The cost of male breast reduction varies by the amount of work that will be performed and the experience level of the surgeon. The cost also depends on any facility fees charged by the facility or the doctor and the area of the country where the procedure is performed. In general, the cost runs anywhere from $5000-$8000.

Patients will notice an immediate improvement in the appearance of their chest. They will be sore for a few days but they should be able to return to work after 2-3 days. There will be a more masculine contour to the appearance of the pectoral area. The results will be permanent as long as the patient maintains a healthy lifestyle. A significant weight gain or steroid use can result in the condition returning.
