Dermaplaning

Dermaplaning is an exfoliation method that involves gently scraping off the top layer of dull, dead skin cells and vellus hair to reveal a smoother, brighter complexion. The procedure begins with the thorough cleansing of the face using a gentle pH balanced cleanser. Then, 10% povidone iodine is applied to the face to prevent skin infections. The skin is held taut as a sterile surgical blade is used to scrape the surface of the skin starting with the lower portions. After scraping, excess dead skin and iodine is removed from the face and then a light moisturizer and a sunscreen of at least 30 SPF is applied. The procedure takes around 40-50 minutes.

Ideal candidates are healthy individuals suffering from superficial hyperpigmentation, wrinkles, fine lines and mild acne scars. Pregnant or breastfeeding women can also undergo the procedure. Patients with overly active sebaceous glands, active and cystic acne and coarse facial hair are not good candidates.

The typical cost for dermaplaning ranges from $150-$250 per treatment. The final cost depends on the surgeon's level of expertise, the geographic location of the procedure and if other procedures are performed at the same time.

The procedure provides a smoother and brighter complexion. The skin may be red and swollen shortly after the procedure and there could also be some slight tingling and aching which can be managed with pain medications. Patients should avoid excessive exposure to sunlight and should wear a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher to reduce the risk of hyperpigmentation. Over the next three months, the results will begin to emerge. For long lasting results patients need to maintain an ongoing treatment plan.
