Dental Crown

Dental Crown

A dental crown is a tooth-shaped cap placed over a tooth. The procedure is performed in 2 stages. The first stage involves using X-rays to check the roots of the tooth and its surrounding bone. Then, the tooth is filed down along the chewing surface and sides. A paste or putty is used to make an impression of the tooth to receive the crown. The impressions are sent to a dental lab where the crown will be manufactured. During this time, a temporary crown is used to cover and protect the prepared tooth. The second stage involves the removal of the temporary crown and the new crown is permanently cemented in place.

Ideal candidates want to protect a weak tooth, hold together parts of a cracked tooth, restore a broken tooth or a tooth that has been severely worn down, hold a dental bridge in place or make a cosmetic modification. This procedure is also for candidates who have a high risk for tooth decay. Patients with an allergic reaction to the metals or porcelain used in the crown are not suitable candidates.

The typical cost ranges from $800-$1700 per crown. There are several factors that can influence the final cost including the type of crown used, the number of teeth to be treated, the geographic location of the procedure and if other procedures are performed at the same time.

The procedure restores a tooth's shape, size and strength. It's also used to improve its appearance. Irritation, inflammation, discomfort and sensitivity will be experienced for a few days. While the temporary crown is in place, sticky or chewy foods should be avoided. It is advised to chew most foods on the opposite side of the mouth. Dental crowns last for a period of 5-15 years.
