Hair Restoration: What to Look for in Your Doctor

Posted October 05, 2016

When it comes to hair restoration, there are a number of options available for patients. The first step in the process is scheduling a consultation appointment with a doctor who specializes in hair transplants. The hair transplant process is one that requires a fine touch and delicate skills from your surgeon of choice in order to achieve the results you desire. A skilled and experienced doctor can help you obtain results that are not noticeable to the general public.

How to Find a Hair Restoration Specialist

Finding the right doctor for your hair transplant surgery is not an easy task. You need to do proper research in order to find a doctor you are comfortable discussing your goals with during the consultation appointment. Your doctor of choice should be licensed to perform the procedure in the state in which he or she resides. Also, most hair restoration specialists are members of the American Board of Hair Restoration Surgery (ABHRS) and many of them are a Fellow of The International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery (FISHRS). A certification from organizations such as these that are recognized around the world means that your doctor has been trained and peer reviewed to the highest standards possible.

Hair Restoration Results

The final results of hair restoration surgery vary depending on the technique performed, your individual hairline goals and the amount of patient donor hair available for the surgery. It is vital that you enter the process with realistic expectations in mind. Take a look at “before and after” patient photos to get a better idea of what to expect. Look for patient photos similar to your case as this will help you decide if the doctor has the right expertise to meet your goals. In general, the final results should last a lifetime if you follow the post-op instructions provided by your doctor.

Patient Feedback

Besides reviewing photos of actual patients, you should try and speak with previous patients of the doctor. Getting a personal viewpoint on what the doctor is like with his patients, as well as the results he or she can provide, is critical to your research process. Many doctors allow you to speak one on one with their previous patients in order to get a better idea of what to expect during your hair restoration journey.

Types of Hair Restoration

There are 2 main techniques used for hair transplants and they are follicular unit transplant and follicular unit extraction. Here are the main differences between the two methods:

  • Follicular Unit Transplant – This technique, also known as FUT, is the process of transplanting hair units in their natural grouping and it has shown great success in preserving the hair follicles during the harvesting process. The follicular units on the body contain one to four hair grafts that are nourished by their own small blood vessels which contain oil glands as well as protein sheaths made of collagen. The units are transplanted from the donor area to the scalp in their natural grouping in order to provide density and fuller looking hair.
  • Follicular Unit Extraction – This method, also known as FUE, is when the doctor individually harvests hair follicle grafts from the donor area on the patient. This allows the doctor to perform the hair follicle removal without leaving a linear scar in the donor area. The grafts are removed one at a time without the need to remove a strip of skin.

Depending on the results the patient is trying to achieve, the total cost of a hair transplant can run anywhere from $5000-$20,000 (or higher). The total cost depends on the method used by the doctor, the total number of grafts and the area of the country in which the surgery is performed.

What Questions to Ask Before Hair Restoration?

Before going to a consultation appointment, it is crucial to have a number of questions in mind to ask your doctor. Here are a few questions to help you get started:

  • Which hair restoration technique is best for me and why?
  • How long have you been performing hair restoration surgery?
  • Can I see before and after pictures of previous patients?
  • What do I need to do to prepare for the procedure?
  • How long is the recovery process?
  • How will the results behave as time passes?
  • Do you offer a payment plan?
  • In case I require a revision, will you charge extra?
