Learn how breast augmentation procedures are performed

Breast augmentation is one of the most popular cosmetic surgery procedures currently performed in the United States. Breast augmentation is also known as augmentation mammoplasty as well as a “boob job”. This cosmetic procedure is performed to provide greater fullness as well as increase the size and shape of the breasts. In general, cosmetic breast augmentation is performed through the use of breast implants or via fat grafting.

Since breast augmentation is such a commonly performed cosmetic surgery procedure, Cosmetic Town TV decided to take an in-depth look at the techniques used to perform cosmetic breast augmentation and to tell patients what they need to know before, during and after their boob job.

Breast Augmentation Techniques

When patients decide to have breast augmentation using breast implants, they will need to consult with a board-certified doctor in order to determine the best type of implant to reach their desired final results.

The implant process begins with the surgeon creating an incision in the patient in order to place the implant. The incision can be placed in a number of locations including:

  • Under the breast (inframammary)
  • The belly button (transumbilical)
  • The armpit (transaxillary)
  • The areola which is the pigmented area around the nipple

The implant that is placed in the patient can be placed under the muscle (submuscular) or above the muscle (subglandular). Once the implants are placed, the incisions are closed with sutures. The implants that are used by cosmetic surgeons can be either saline breast implants (containing sterile salt water) that are filled at the time of the surgery to give a uniform feel and appearance to the breasts or silicone breast implants (filled with silicone gel) that are pre-filled and are approved only for patients age 22 or older. In addition, patients can also choose gummy bear implants which are cohesive gel silicone implants that have a teardrop shape to give them more projection at the bottom of the breast.

Instead of having implants placed in the body, some patients choose fat grafting as their breast augmentation procedure of choice. Fat grafting is also known as autologous fat transfer and begins with fat being removed from another part of the body using liposuction. The fat is then cleansed and purified before bring injected back into the body in the area of the breasts. Fat grafting is a good cosmetic breast augmentation option for patients that have a good amount of excess fat in the abdomen or thighs and they are not interested in having implants placed in the body.

Patients should be aware of the fact that there will usually be some scarring after undergoing breast augmentation. The size of the scar depends on the incision length and the type of implant used by the surgeon. In general, saline implants need smaller incisions than silicone implants. The scars usually start to fade or flatten within three to six months and they will mature in about twelve months.

Breast Augmentation Candidates, Recovery and Results

Good candidates for breast augmentation include patients that have breasts that they feel are too small or they have breasts that have lose their shape or volume due to the aging process, pregnancy or weight loss. In addition, patients that want to have cosmetic breast augmentation often have breasts that are asymmetrical or breasts that are misshaped.

The amount of time off work that patients require after breast augmentation depends on the amount of physical activity they perform at their job. Overall, they should avoid lifting anything over 5-10 pounds for an amount of time determined by the doctor. There will be some bruising and swelling after the surgery for around two to three weeks. Patients should expect a downtime period of six to eight weeks when it comes to exercise after cosmetic breast augmentation surgery.

The final results depend on the amount of augmentation desired by the patient, the size of the implants, the amount of fat injected into the body during fat grafting and the amount and elasticity of any existing breast tissue on the body of the patient. The results from fat grafting are long lasting and can even last a lifetime while breast implants can last anywhere from 10-25 years.

Consult with a Board-Certified Breast Augmentation Surgeon

Before making the final decision to undergo breast augmentation, patients need to consult with a board-certified surgeon that is experienced in performing breast augmentation surgery. The doctor will perform a thorough examination of the patient and also make sure that the person that desires cosmetic breast augmentation desires the changes in the size of their breasts as opposed to undergoing the surgery to make someone else happy with their appearance.

Patients also need to understand that there is no such thing as a “perfect breast size”. They should choose a breast size that is natural looking for their body and does not cause any discomfort or pain due to the size or weight of the breasts.
