Can Butt Implants Explode or is it a Myth?

Posted December 03, 2015

One cosmetic procedure that has grown in popularity in the last few years is the placement of butt implants in the buttocks of a patient. From celebrities on the red carpet to regular everyday people, the augmentation of the buttocks is desired by many people. For those folks unhappy with the small size of their buttocks as well as those who feel their backside is too flat, butt implants are a way to gain some volume in the buttocks area. As popular as the procedure has become thanks to celebrities like the Kardashians, there is one story that has made its way around the Internet about the danger of butt implants.

According to a news story from NewsWatch 33, a woman named Serena Beuford fell into a coma following an accident at her gym. Beuford was doing squats at a gym in Boston when her implants exploded while she was exercising. According to witnesses at the gym, Beuford cried out in pain after a loud popping noise was heard by many in the gym. As emergency medical personnel took Beuford away, one patron at the gym noticed that Beuford’s “cushion like butt” was missing.

According to the sister of the exploding implants victim, Beuford was filming an Instagram video while doing squats at Planet Fitness in downtown Boston. Beuford was filming the video in an attempt to become famous for her whopping 64-inch size butt. The sister went on to say that Beuford received her implants at a clinic that was unlicensed. Thanks to the exploding implants, the victim will need surgery to repair damage to her lower intestines, rectum and colon.

While this story is a good lesson on the dangers of butt implants, as well as having a procedure performed in an unlicensed facility, it is also totally and completely false. It turns out that NewsWatch33 is actually a website that specializes in fake news. Before the story was investigated and deemed to be a false news item, many legitimate news outlets and websites picked up the story and ran it as an actual news item. Some of the outlets that fell for the story include the Uproxx website, Cosmopolitan magazine and a television news station in San Antonio.

A number of plastic surgeons have spoken out about the story since it started spreading on the Internet. Many of them have stated that it is almost impossible for butt implants to pop and explode as detailed in the story. For one thing, implants that are approved by the FDA are made from a rubber silicone that is soft and can’t break or leak. Experts went on to say that the implants will not pop like a balloon. After the implants are placed in the buttocks of a patient and are healed and in place, the patient should enjoy a full range of motion and movement that wouldn’t be hampered or bothered by any high impact exercise routine.

The one truthful item in the fake news story that can help patients considering butt implants is the fact that they need to consult with a board-certified doctor before undergoing the procedure. In fact, having implants placed by someone who isn’t board-certified can lead to disfiguring and deadly results. Many board-certified doctors have been visited by patients looking for help after their implants were placed by non-board-certified physicians. Butt implants can cause certain complications including infections as well as the body rejecting the implants. A board-certified physician is best trained and qualified to deal with any complications that might occur after the surgery.

The next time a story runs on the Internet about a cosmetic surgery procedure gone horribly wrong, it is best to do some research before making a final decision on whether or not the story is true. There is a great deal of actual medical knowledge on the Internet that can be found on a variety of reputable websites including CosmeticTown Journal. Exercising some caution and doing a proper amount of research in order to gain necessary knowledge about a cosmetic surgery procedure can save a patient both time and money in the long run and also achieve the results they desire.
