The top plastic surgery procedures for millennials in 2019

According to the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (AAFPRS), there is a growing trend towards “prejuvenation” AKA “preventative rejuvenation” among millennial patients. Earlier this year, the AAFPRS reported an increase of 47\\% in surgical procedures among patients age 22-37 as this age group seeks to make minor changes to their appearance so they undergo cosmetic surgery procedures such as Botox and filler to prevent signs of aging before they actually start to appear on the face. While this trend is growing in popularity, cosmetic surgeons are divided on the issue. Some of them support the idea of using quality skin care products to make a person feel better about their appearance while others say there is no documented evidence that Botox and fillers help millennial patients prevent the signs of aging.

According to a survey by the AAFPRS, the top three millennial plastic surgery procedure choices listed below are driven by the desire to look better in selfies posted online on social media. Patients are more self-aware of their facial appearance and want to look like their online appearance at all times. Let’s take a closer look at the trends in millennial plastic surgery procedures that are growing in popularity across the country.

Top Three Plastic Surgery Procedures for Millennials

The most popular plastic surgery procedures among millennials include:

  1. Rhinoplasty – The AAFPRS reports that rhinoplasty, AKA surgery on the nose, is the number one surgical facial procedure among millennial patients. A recent survey regarding the impact of rhinoplasty on personality and attractiveness shows that rhinoplasty improves perceived aspects of the personality such as likability, trustworthiness and attractiveness. Many patients undergo the procedure to make desired changes in the size and shape of the nose. In addition, rhinoplasty can also make functional changes in the nose that allow a patient to breathe easier. Permanent changes to the nose can be made via surgical rhinoplasty while temporary changes can be made to the appearance of the nose using injections of fillers. There are a number of patients that choose to make changes in the look of their nose using fillers because they are not willing to undergo a surgical procedure. In addition, they enjoy the fact that the results from fillers are not permanent. They are able to view the results that are available to the appearance of the nose so they can decide if they want to eventually make a permanent change through surgical rhinoplasty. If they do not like the look of their nose after the fillers are injected, they simply have to wait until the fillers are absorbed by the body for the results to fade.
  2. Revision Surgery – Revision surgery is defined as treatments that reverse the results of previously performed procedures. These revision surgeries are normally performed through the use of lasers or injections and have grown in popularity due to the number of plastic surgery procedures that are performed by providers that are inexperienced at plastic surgery. Experienced board-certified doctors emphasize the actual plastic surgery procedures are not the issue. Rather, the issue that results in the need for revision plastic surgery is the way the treatment is performed. It is necessary for patients to do proper research on their doctor of choice to make sure the medical provider is board-certified, licensed and experienced in performing the plastic surgery procedure of choice. Patients should ask to see “before and after” photos of actual patients treated by the plastic surgeon in order to view the type of results they can expect to see after the surgery.
  3. Otoplasty – A procedure that is also known as ear pinning, otoplasty corrects ear deformities or defects that have been present since birth or are the result of an injury or previous surgery on the patient. Millennial patients are looking to correct ear issues such as asymmetry, the loss of cartilage or skin, ears that are viewed as being too big in their appearance or stick out to far from the head and also any sort of injury or trauma to the ears. Many millennials have been teased about their ears while growing up and they want to have otoplasty in order to get the appearance to their ears they have always desired.

Consultation Appointment for Millennial Plastic Surgery Procedures

Before millennials, or patients of any age, decide to undergo plastic surgery they need to schedule a consultation appointment with a board-certified doctor. The doctor will examine the patient and tell the person the pros and cons of undergoing the procedure. In addition, the plastic surgeon can set realistic expectations for the patient to make sure the person is aware of the results that can be achieved by undergoing the plastic surgery procedure of choice. A knowledgeable and well-informed patient is the best kind of plastic surgery patient. The person will have all of the necessary information about the various steps involved in undergoing plastic surgery and will be prepared to make the proper decision regarding the changes that will be made to his or her appearance.
