Breast Implant Revision

Breast implant revision corrects deformities that result immediately after breast implant surgery and in implants that have lasted for years. Factors such as aging, malposition of the implants, breast sagging, weight gain or loss and implant rupture impact the breasts. The surgery replaces old breast implants with new implants. The surgeon makes an incision that depends on the type of procedure performed. The incision can be an inframammary incision in the crease of the breast, a vertical incision like a breast lift or an incision that goes some, or all the way around, the areola AKA a periareolar incision. The implants are replaced and sutures are used to close the incision.

Ideal candidates for breast implant revision include someone whose breast deformity can be corrected by modifying the current pocket to place the implant without increasing the size of the new implants. Another candidate is a patient who needs a change in the placement of the implant pocket from beneath the breast tissue to beneath the muscle. Other patients might need to have excess sagging skin removed as well as an elevation of the nipples that are pointed downward.

The cost of breast implant revision varies depending on the amount of work that needs to be done during the revision, if the new implants are the same size as the old implants, any fees charged by the doctor or the facility and whether the surgeon that placed the original implants offers a warranty with their breast augmentation services that will cover the cost of the new implants. In general, the cost will be anywhere from $1500-$4000.

Patients should meet with a doctor before having a breast implant revision as it is important to have realistic expectations about the results that can be achieved by the procedure. The final results will provide an improved appearance and increased physical comfort for the patient if the old implants have ruptured. Patients should also realize that the implants need to be the right size for their body type in order to achieve realistic looking results. If a patient does not have any health issues from the implants, they can last anywhere from 10-15 years before they need to be replaced.
