Robotic Hair Transplant

Robotic hair transplant is performed using the ARTAS system. The system allows for harvesting hair from the donor area of patients using the Follicular Unit Extraction method (r-FUE). The surgeon plans the hairline and then marks the donor area on the back and sides of the scalp. The patient is placed in a sitting position with the face put over a donut shaped pillow for maximum stability. A tensioner is placed over the donor area to stabilize the skin during the harvesting portion. ARTAS cameras capture microscopic images of the follicular units and an image-guided robotic arm extracts the hair follicles while the doctor makes necessary adjustments to properly harvest the grafts.

An ideal candidate is any patient with typical patterned baldness. A good candidate is also a patient that wants to keep the hair short or shaved. Good candidates also include patients that want to restore their hairline and improve the density or thickness of their hair.

The cost of robotic hair transplant depends on the number of grafts used by the surgeon as well as the price per graft charged by the doctor. The price per graft is anywhere from $6-$18 per graft and the final cost can be anywhere from $5000-$25,000 depending on the total number of grafts. The price also varies according to the skill of the surgeon and the geographic location of the surgery.

The scalp can be tender after robotic FUE and patients can see some swelling around the forehead and eyes for a few days. Scabbing will also be seen for four or five days until the patient can wash their hair aggressively.  The transplanted hair falls out and then starts to grow again after three or four months. The final results will be seen within nine to twelve months and the results are permanent.
