MTF Vaginoplasty

MTF vaginoplasty involves the conversion of the penile and scrotal tissues into a vagina, clitoris and labia. The standard procedure is a penile inversion surgery. It involves making an incision between the rectum, urethra and the prostate to form a tunnel. The walls of the tunnel will be lined with skin from the scrotum, penis or both. Also, additional skin can be taken from the thighs or abdomen. The tunnel forms the vaginal walls, the glans forms the clit and the G-spot, the scrotum becomes the labia majora while the lining of the excess urethra is used to create the labia minora.

Ideal candidates are healthy transgender women confident in their decision to undergo the surgery. The best candidates are patients over 18 years of age that have a well-documented history of gender dysphoria and are fully committed to the procedure and their transition.

The typical cost ranges from $10,000-$30,000.The final cost depends on hospital or surgeon fees, anesthesia fees, the surgeon’s level of expertise and the geographic location of the procedure.

The procedure creates a new and functioning vagina. After the procedure, patients are required to spend 3-6 days at the clinic followed by 7-10 days of outpatient supervision.  Patients should refrain from any strenuous activity for approximately 6 weeks. The use of a catheter is required for about 1-3 weeks after the surgery. It is recommended that patients use a graduated series of hard plastic stents to dilate the vagina for the first 6-12 months to maintain depth and diameter. In general, the results last a lifetime.
