MTF Facial Feminization Surgery

MTF facial feminization surgery modifies facial features to give a feminine shape and soften masculine features. The surgery addresses separate areas of the face including forehead procedures, hairline alteration, rhinoplasty, lip lift and chin surgery. Forehead procedures shave down hard angles and reduce the prominence of the brow bone. Hairline alteration lowers the hairline to combat receding or transplant hair for a full appearance. Rhinoplasty contours the nose to look less masculine. A lip lift makes a shorter distance between the upper lip and the base of the nose. Chin surgery gives prominence through an implant or a smaller look via chin reduction.

Ideal candidates are healthy transgender women confident in their decision to have the surgery. The best candidates are over 18 years of age with a well-documented history of gender dysphoria and are fully committed to the procedure and their transition. The patient should be in good health and free from excessive bleeding tendencies, infections, high blood pressure and any medical conditions that may impact the surgery.

The typical cost for MTF facial femininization surgery ranges from $20,000-$50,000. The final cost depends on the patient's existing features (the degree of "masculinity" in the facial features being feminized), the number of procedures required to achieve the desired result, if the surgery is done at once or broken up into multiple sessions, the surgeon’s level of expertise and the geographic location of the procedure.

The procedure gives a more feminine shape and the recovery time varies by which procedures are performed and how many are performed at the same time. In general, two weeks of rest is needed after the surgery. Patients should refrain from strenuous activity, or lifting heavy objects for about six weeks. The face swells and bruises considerably after the surgery and bandages are wrapped around the face to minimize any swelling. The bandages should be kept on for one week. The results can last a lifetime as long as all necessary instructions are followed.
