Lip Implants

Lip augmentation, using lip implants or dermal fillers, increases lip volume by filling any creases related to the aging process along the lip border. The surgeon makes small incisions at the corners of the mouth to create a thin tunnel in which to insert the implant and thread it through the lip. The lip implant is trimmed to the proper length and the incisions are closed. Popular lip implants include GORE-TEX, SoftForm and AlloDerm. GORE-TEX has micropores through which the natural lip tissue grows. SoftForm lip implants have a tubular shape that lessens the chance of migration. AlloDerm is made from donated skin and has few allergic responses.

Most women that want to add volume to their lips are good candidates for lip implants. This is especially true of patients with naturally thin lips or a decrease in lip volume due to the aging process. Lip implants are also ideal for patients with wrinkles around the mouth as well as anyone who is happy with the appearance of their lips but would also like them to look full and alluring.

The cost of getting lip implants varies by the type of implant used as well as any fees charged by the doctor or the facility. The geographic location of the procedure can also impact the cost of the procedure. In general, lip implants cost from $2000-$3500 as the cost does not vary much per implant type.

Patients can experience some stiffness of the lips after the procedure as well as some swelling and bruising. The swelling and bruising will resolve on its own and the stiffness will fade as the person adjusts to having the implants. The results are long lasting, and can often be considered permanent, as long as the patient does not suffer from implant migration.
