Eyelid Retraction

Eyelid retraction is characterized by the displacement of the upper or lower eyelid to expose the sclera (white part of the eye) and create a bulging eye appearance and exposure problems for the eye. Upper eyelid retraction uses a sensory nerve block so patients are awake and able to move their eyelids so the surgeon can make controlled adjustments.  One upper procedure is an excision of Müller's muscle or a combined excision of Müller's muscle and partial cutting of the levator muscles. Lower eyelid retraction can be corrected with spacer grafts that push the lower eyelid upward and support it from below.

The ideal candidate have droopy eyelids, bags under the eyes, a bulging eye appearance, exposure issues and an eyelid that has retracted enough to expose the white part of the eye. In addition, patients with creases or folds in the lower eyelids are good candidates.

The cost for either procedure ranges from $2500 to $4000. Eyelid retraction surgery costs vary thanks to anesthesia costs, operating room facility fees and the geographic location of the procedure. A surgeon's cost for eyelid surgery may vary based on his or her experience and the type of procedure used.

Eyelid retraction repair patients should expect some bruising and swelling which can last anywhere from three days to three weeks. The healing process can take up to six months after the procedure. The results of upper eyelid retraction surgery can last anywhere from five to seven years while the lower version of the surgery is considered to be permanent.
