Dark Circle Under Eye

Dark circles under the eyes can be treated by dermal fillers, chemical peels or carboxytherapy. Dark circles caused by pigment can be removed by stimulating the lower skin layers with a laser. In addition, cosmetic lower eyelid surgery can involve skin incisions directly below the lash line or an incision on the inside of the eyelid. This is called a transconjunctival approach and it allows for access to the eyelid without visible incisions. Eyelid incisions typically are closed with sutures or skin glue. It is an excellent option for patients whose dark circles are caused by symptoms of aging and not by temporary lifestyle choices like lack of sleep.

Ideal candidates are usually 35 years or older. If baggy eyelids or droopy eyelids run in the family of a patient, he or she may decide to undergo treatments or have the surgery done sooner. Patients should be physically and psychologically healthy and must not have health conditions like glaucoma or high blood pressure. Chronic smokers and drinkers can't undergo these treatments because they are prone to a risk of excessive internal and external bleeding. Also, individuals with tight facial skin are not good candidates as the surgery requires the facial muscles to be stretched and this requires some facial elasticity.

Dermal filler injections, such as Juvederm or Restylane, cost around $500 to $1000 while a laser treatment for dark circles costs around $300 to $600 per treatment. It typically takes at least three treatments so the total can be $900 or more. Surgical treatment for dark circles can involve an arcus marginalis release (moving fat) combined with fat grafting and the cost runs from $2000 to $5000. The cost of dark circles under eye treatments also depends on some factors such as the type of treatment performed, the expertise of the surgeon and the geographic location of the treatment.

After surgery, the surgeon uses an ointment to reduce dryness and lubricate the area. This may cause temporary blurring. The patient should rest with the head in an elevated position and use ice packs on the treated areas to reduce swelling. Swelling and bruising disappears after 10 days. Do not indulge in any heavy physical activities like working out, bending and lifting in the first month after surgery. Avoid direct exposure to the sun and use dark sunglasses in the weeks that follow the surgery and in all recovery stages.
