Common questions to ask your cosmetic surgeon

Once you make the decision to have plastic surgery, the next step is finding an experienced and board-certified plastic surgeon to handle the procedure. You should also schedule a consultation appointment in order to ask address any questions or concerns you have on your mind about the plastic surgery of choice. Not sure what you need to ask your plastic surgeon about the procedure? Check out our list of common questions to ask your plastic surgeon in this informative article.

Common Questions to Ask a Plastic Surgeon

1. What is your experience in performing plastic surgery?

Since your plastic surgery choice is likely a surgical procedure, you will want a doctor that is experienced in multiple areas of surgery (as opposed to someone that only practices non-surgical procedures). It is a good to have a doctor that knows about treating multiple areas of the body so the doctor understands the importance of providing balance to the features of the body. You will also want a surgeon that is very experienced in performing your desired plastic surgery and has a track record of satisfied patients and successful results. Plastic surgery can create results that last a lifetime so it is important that the doctor have the necessary experience to provide results that are natural in appearance. You do not want to be the “test subject” of a new plastic surgeon that is just learning how to perform breast augmentation or rhinoplasty or BBL. Do not be afraid or embarrassed to ask the doctor about their medical training and surgical experience. It is better to know in advance than to take a chance on a surgery that could leave you scarred or disfigured.

2. What is involved in the recovery process?

Learning about the plastic surgery recovery process is a vital piece of information you need to know before the procedure. You need to find out how much time is necessary to take off work, if you will need help from friends or family when you return home and the steps you need to take to ensure you are properly caring for any wounds, bandages or dressings you will have to wear once you are home. It might seem rude to phrase it this way but…Plastic surgery is not an inexpensive choice. Insurance will sometimes cover the cost of plastic surgery if the treatment is deemed to be medically necessary. However, you don’t want to spend a lot of money on a procedure and then void the results by not following the post-op instructions provided to you by your doctor.

3. How much will the plastic surgery procedure cost?

The cost for a plastic surgery procedure involves more than just the actual surgery. There are additional fees involved in the total cost and they include anesthesia fess, facility fees, lab fees and more. Ask your doctor for a breakdown of the fees before the surgery so you can avoid any surprises when you receive the bill.

4. Do you have “before and after” photos of actual patients?

A surgeon can talk all about the great results they have provided in the past but you might want to see the actual results of real patients. Ask the doctor for examples of “before and after” photos of the specific plastic surgery procedure you have in mind.

5. When will the results from the surgery be visible?

The healing process after plastic surgery is different for each patient.  However, the doctor can give you a general idea of how long the healing process will take as well as the steps involved in proper healing after the surgery. It is important to have a plan for the healing process so you will be able to do what is needed to help ensure successful results.

6. Do you have the proper and necessary hospital privileges to perform the desired plastic surgery procedure?

There are many plastic surgery procedures that require a visit to the hospital for the treatment. If your plastic surgery of choice needs to be performed at a hospital, be sure and ask your surgeon if they have hospital privileges/access to the medical facility. If complications happen during the surgery, it is important that the doctor is authorized to perform a certain type of patient care in a specified healthcare facility.

Now that you know the questions you need to ask, be sure and get the information you want before making the final commitment to have a plastic surgery procedure. An informed patient is an ideal patient and that means the patient is entering the operating room with the knowledge they need to navigate the plastic surgery process. There are certain steps you need to follow before and after the treatment. It is not ideal to ask these questions in a last minute fashion. You need to know the answers, in advance, to your questions so you will be able to have plastic surgery with the peace of mind that comes from being prepared with proper and accurate patient information.
