Cosmetic surgery pandemic growth

The pandemic forced everyone to spend more time inside which also meant more time looking at their appearance. In turn, this led to a greater number of cosmetic surgery procedures being performed as patients wanted to gain a younger and more refreshed look after viewing their appearance on Zoom calls on a daily basis. When it comes to the increase in cosmetic surgery procedures, there is one group in particular that is responsible for seeking out more treatments than any other group. Take a look at the informative article below to learn which age group is leading the way in cosmetic surgery.

Cosmetic Surgery – Most Popular Age Group Revealed

According to research trends, more women under the age of forty-five are actively looking to have cosmetic procedures. This trend has been shown to be driven by the ongoing global pandemic and women between the ages of thirty-one and forty-five made up a majority of cosmetic surgery patients between 2021 and 2022.

Let’s start our exploration of this trend with a video from Cosmetic Town TV about why women under the age of forty-five turned to plastic surgery during the pandemic:

In a new survey conducted by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, the amount of business enjoyed by 30% of its member clinics has been shown to grow by an increase of double (or more) since March 2020. In addition, three-quarters of the respondents have reported an increased level of business at their practice.

In an interview with the New York Post, Dr. Anthony Youn, a plastic surgeon from Detroit said, “This is definitely true. There is a huge boom in plastic surgery since our practices re-opened.”

Most Popular Age Group for Plastic SurgeryThe American Society of Plastic Surgeons says the continuing success of the plastic surgery industry can be traced back to the pandemic. The survey conducted by the organization revealed that more than a third of patients used their mandated time at home to put their money towards saving for a cosmetic procedure (since they could recover at home), or they decided to use money they were saving for a vacation to pay for a procedure. Some of the other reasons given for having plastic surgery included wanting to feel more confident following the need to stay home and having to view their faces on computer screens on a regular basis thanks to working from home.

Having said all that, the survey might have overlooked the contributing factor of social media which might explain the rising trend of younger women visiting the office of doctors to discuss and undergo cosmetic procedures.

Overall, the public is viewing their appearance on a computer screen on a regular basis, and this makes them much more aware of their appearance. This leads to many people making the decision to look less tired and more refreshed and rejuvenated, which also gives them a younger look. In order to look younger, patients are turning to facial and neck procedures such as Botox, fillers, facelift, and neck lift. Plus, the ongoing worry and stress caused by COVID-19 has caused many people to reassess their stance on cosmetic procedures as they realize it is okay to actually do something for themselves and their appearance.

Female Patients – What are They Requesting?

The American Society of Plastic Surgeons shared the top cosmetic procedures being requested by patients in 2021-2022. In order, the Top Five surgical procedures are liposuction, facelift, breast augmentation, tummy tuck, and breast lift. In addition, four of these procedures were most requested by women between the ages of thirty-one and forty-five. The only exception was a facelift which remains a top request among older female patients.

Younger patients, including millennials, are experienced at finding the information they want to know. Once they obtain the desired information, they like to share their knowledge and experience with others on social media platforms. Because there is so much sharing of information, cosmetic procedures stop being mysterious, and they become accessible and relatable to others.

It remains to be seen if cosmetic surgery continues to be a popular choice for patients with disposable income thanks to the pandemic. More than likely, this trend will continue as many employees are still working from home, which gives them the ability to recover in private and away from the gaze of those they work with on a daily basis.

In other words, any uncertainty about the pandemic has not deterred the public from making the decision to have cosmetic surgery. Dr. Youn says the business of cosmetic surgery “doesn’t seem to show any signs of fading” and the lasting power of this field of medicine might be due to the fact that it seems to be immune to changes in the economy. “Cosmetic treatment prices haven’t kept up with inflation. Practices are usually fairly slow in raising prices.”

If this is the case, it looks like members of the public who are interested in having some type of cosmetic surgery procedure will be able to enjoy quality treatments at an affordable price in the near future.
