Five questions to ask before your cosmetic surgery procedure

Are you interested in undergoing a cosmetic surgery procedure but not sure about the process? Are you worried about the type of results you can achieve having a cosmetic procedure? These are the type of questions that are quite common when it comes to cosmetic surgery patients of all ages. Before making the final decision to have a cosmetic surgery procedure such as rhinoplasty, liposuction or breast augmentation, it is important to ask any and all questions you have in mind so you can erase any fears or doubts about the treatment. Here are some of the most popular questions about cosmetic surgery that you should ask your doctor when you go to a medical office for a consultation appointment.

Questions to Ask Your Cosmetic Surgeon

1. Ask if the Surgeon is Board-Certified

One of the most important steps you can take is to ask the surgeon if he, or she, is a board-certified surgeon. The act of checking the qualifications of the person you are considering for your cosmetic procedure will help to ensure the credibility of the person. If the cosmetic surgeon in question is board-certified by the American Board of Cosmetic Surgery (or a similar cosmetic surgery board), the certification will help to answer numerous questions about the training background of the surgeon as well as the experience of the medical professional. In addition, the board-certification status shows an ongoing commitment to patient safety as well as a commitment to patient education about the procedure in question. If the doctor is not able to show you any proof of being board-certified or is not willing to answer your background and experience questions, that is a good sign to look for another doctor to perform your cosmetic procedure of choice.

2. Ask to See “Before and After” Photos

If the cosmetic surgeon is experienced in performing the procedure you are interested in undergoing, the doctor will likely have “before and after” photos of actual patients treated in their office or in a medical surgical center. You can ask to see the photos when you visit the office or you can simply view them on the website of the doctor. “Before and after” photos of actual patients give you a realistic idea of the type of results you can expect to see after the cosmetic treatment.  You can also ask to speak to some of the previous patients that had the cosmetic procedure of choice to get their feedback and input about the treatment and the doctor.

3. Determine the Experience of the Surgeon in Performing the Cosmetic Procedure

Make sure that the cosmetic surgeon performs the procedure you want to undergo on a regular basis. The frequency of the surgeon performing the cosmetic procedure of choice will help you determine if he, or she, is the right choice for you. In addition, the amount of times that the person has performed the specific cosmetic surgery should give you a good idea of whether or not the doctor can achieve your desired results.

4. Ask the Surgeon about the Location of the Procedure

In this case, asking the doctor about the location of the procedure does not refer to where on the body that the cosmetic surgery is performed. The question about the location of the cosmetic surgery refers to the actual physical location where the procedure will take place once it is scheduled. Ask the surgeon if the procedure will be performed in the office of the doctor or if it will take place in a medical clinic or a hospital. The location of the cosmetic surgery should (ideally) be close to your home to make it easy for you to travel to, and from, the location on the day of the surgery.

5. Ask Questions about the Length and Restrictions of the Recovery Process

It is important for you to know, in advance, the details about the recovery process of the procedure you have in mind. You need to know if you will be able to handle your recovery period on your own or if you will need some some help from family and friends. Ask how long it will take before you can begin to resume your regular daily activities. You should also ask about any side effects such as bruising or swelling or redness that might be visible to others once you return home. It is also important to know about the possible risks of the treatment so you can be prepared to recognize and treat the risks if necessary. It is better to be prepared and take any necessary precautions rather than let them catch you by surprise during the recovery period.

Cosmetic Surgery Consultation Appointment

All of the above questions can be asked during a consultation appointment with your cosmetic surgeon. The consultation appointment is your opportunity to ask questions in a one-on-one setting so you can easily ask any follow-up questions if you have any additional thoughts or concerns. An informed patient is a patient that is armed with the necessary knowledge to be ready to have a successful and life-changing cosmetic surgery procedure.
