Eye bag removal - Latest millennial cosmetic surgery trend

Millennials spend a lot of time looking at their phones or watching entire seasons of TV shows in one day. The increased time they spend staring at a screen has led to eye bag removal surgery being one of the latest millennial cosmetic surgery trends. Eye bag surgery is a procedure that is known as lower blepharoplasty. In this treatment, fatty tissue and excess skin that is located below the eyes are removed by the surgeon. While this procedure was mainly popular among middle aged patients in the past, it has grown to include millennial patients due to the lack of sleep they get thanks to increased screen time watching TV or videos on the Internet.

Eye Bag Surgery and Online Viewing

According to research from the DQ Institute, an internationally recognized think tank, children in Britain spend almost two days a week look at their screens online.

In an interview with the Daily Telegraph, Dr. Julian De Silva, a facial surgery specialist said “Traditionally, issues with bags in the lower eyelid will be from those over 40, but there has been an increasing number of patients in their late teens and 20s. I think social media has played a role, with Instagram making people look perfect, meaning young people have an increased expectation.”

Blepharoplasty and Reasons for the Procedure

Patients that have cosmetic procedures for under-eye bags want to achieve a refreshed and rejuvenated appearance to their eyes.

In addition to trying to eliminate the eye bags caused by too much time staring at a phone or TV screen, patients want to eliminate bags under the eyes caused by the aging process, damage from the sun or from a health condition such as a thyroid issue.

One of the main reasons that many people do not have the cosmetic procedure is that the cost might not be covered by insurance. In general, insurance will only cover eye bag surgery if it needs to be performed for a medical reason such as the excess skin and fat impacting the ability of the person to see properly. Overall, the cost of eye bag surgery is anywhere from $4000-$6500.

More male patients than ever are undergoing eye bag surgery to achieve a refreshed and rejuvenated appearance. These men want to have a more youthful look in the workplace thanks to under-eye rejuvenation.

Lower Eye Bag Surgery Explained

Lower eye bag surgery is performed to enhance and improve the look of the under-eye area that is viewed as being sagging or baggy.  The procedure can tighten loose eyelid skin, perform under-eye fat removal, eliminate excess skin and reduce the amount of wrinkles found in the lower eye area.

As a person gets older, the skin will start to lose its elasticity and some of its fat. The loss of the elasticity and fat can make the lower eyelid have a look that is baggy, puffy and/or filled with wrinkles. The surgery is successful in giving the under-eye area a smooth and youthful appearance.

Lower Eye Bag Surgery – How it is performed

The amount of work performed by the surgeon during lower eye bag surgery depends on the condition of the skin and the type of results expected by the patient.

Before the procedure is started, a surgeon will make marks on the eyelids that show where the incisions will be placed. The surgery can be performed under local or general anesthesia.

The surgeon makes several incisions into the lower eyelid. The incisions allow the doctor to remove any excess skin and fat and also sew the skin back together to create an appearance that is smoother, more youthful and lifted.

The areas under the eyes enjoy a decrease in bags, sagging, wrinkling and darkness under the eyes that is visible to others.

Eye Bag Surgery Risks

Patients that want to reduce the appearance of bags under the eyes should be aware of the following risks:

  • Bleeding
  • Double vision
  • Removal of too much muscle
  • Infection
  • Skin discoloration
  • Infection
  • Loss of vision (this is a rare risk but it can happen)

Eye Bag Surgery Recovery and Results

The recovery period starts with applying cold compresses to the treated area for a couple of days after surgery to help reduce the amount of swelling after the procedure. The doctor will also prescribe drops and ointments for the eyes to keep the area comfortable.

The patient will need to wear darkly tinted sunglasses to protect the eyes as the skin heals. The swelling and bruising will decrease after about 14 days and will not be noticeable to others.

The final results are considered to be permanent as long as the patient follows the post-op instructions and also maintains a healthy lifestyle.

Patients ranging from millennials to those in their 40s and 50s (and older) are advised to schedule a consultation appointment with a surgeon to determine if eye bag plastic surgery can deliver their desired eye rejuvenation results and overall appearance to the area under their eyes.
