Learn everything you need to know about having rhinoplasty

Are you concerned that your nose is too wide or cooked in appearance? Does your nose have a look that is too big when you are looking in a mirror? If so, you can turn to rhinoplasty to make the desired changes in the size, shape or appearance of the nose. Rhinoplasty, which is also known as a nose job, is performed to alter the size or shape of the nose as well as improve the nasal functions that allow a patient to breathe easier on a daily basis. Plus, rhinoplasty can also address any defects or deformities that resulted from some form or injury or trauma to the nose. No matter the reason for wanting to undergo rhinoplasty, here is everything you need to know before making the final decision to have the surgery.

Rhinoplasty – Choosing a Surgeon

When planning to undergo rhinoplasty, it is important to determine if you are looking to improve the shape and contour of the nose or if you want to improve the overall nasal airway function. You might also be looking to make changes in the nose that involve both the form and the function of the nose. It is important for you to perform proper research and choose a surgeon that is experienced in improving both the aesthetic appearance of the nose and the internal functionality of the nose.

One step in the research process is checking the experience of the surgeon when it comes to providing long-lasting, natural results from rhinoplasty. Be sure and ask about the credentials of the doctor and you can also ask for references from previous patients. Doctors that are experienced in performing rhinoplasty should be able to share “before and after” photos of actual patients so you view the type of results the doctor provides on a regular basis.

Once you are comfortable with the background and skills of the surgeon, schedule a consultation appointment to discuss your desired final results. In addition, the surgeon will ask about your medical history and any medications you took in the past or that you are currently taking. The surgeon will also walk you through each step of the rhinoplasty process so you will know how to prepare for the surgery, what to expect during the procedure and the post-op instructions you will be expected to follow to ensure a successful recovery.

Rhinoplasty Preparation

During the consultation appointment for the rhinoplasty surgery, the doctor will examine the nose to get a better understanding of the aesthetic changes that can be made while still maintaining a natural look to the nose. The doctor will determine the reasons for any structural defects that can cause you to suffer from breathing difficulties. Plus, the surgeon will take photographs of the face, from various angles, to better evaluate your nasal anatomy.

Rhinoplasty Surgery Choices

When it comes to having a nose job, there are usually two options when it comes to performing rhinoplasty:

  • Open rhinoplasty is where the surgeon places the incisions for the surgery on the outside of the nose. The surgeon enters the nose through the nostrils to have access to the cartilage and bones in the nose. You could have some visible scars after the surgery since the incisions are made on the outside of the nose.
  • Closed rhinoplasty is a technique where the cosmetic surgeon creates the necessary incisions on the inside of the nose. This rhinoplasty technique means you will not have any visible scars on the nose since the incisions are made on the inside. However, the surgeon is not able to view the inner part of the nose as easily as it occurs during open rhinoplatsy.

The amount of time it takes to perform the surgery, along with the total amount of changes that will be performed on the bone and cartilage in the nose, depends on the extent of the final results desired by the patient. In general, rhinoplasty can normally be performed in three or four hours. After the surgery is over, a splint is placed on the nose for around one week. Once the splint is removed, you will be able to get a better look at the new appearance of the nose.

Rhinoplasty Recovery Period

You might feel a little bit of pain or discomfort after the procedure. During the first 24 hours after the surgery, you should put an ice pack around your forehead and eyes to address any pain or discomfort. Keep your head elevated as well for the first day or two after the surgery. Don’t blow your nose for at least seven days after the surgery as the pressure from blowing the nose can lead to cartilage displacement or an infection. The nasal cast will be removed after a week so the doctor can check how well you are healing after the surgery.

The shape of the nose will slowly change over time and there will be some swelling that can last for up to one year. Overall, it can take six to nine months to a year to see the final results. The results should last a lifetime as long as you do not suffer a traumatic injury or trauma to the nose.

Nonsurgical Rhinoplasty Alternative

Liquid rhinoplasty is a nonsurgical, non-invasive rhinoplasty procedure where fillers are injected into the nose to alter its shape and size. Liquid rhinoplasty is an ideal treatment for someone that is looking to make changes to minor depressions or small irregularities in the shape of the nose. It is also a good choice for someone that is not willing to commit to having a surgical procedure. The results can last anywhere from six to twelve months (or longer) depending on the amount of filler that is used by the doctor.
