Do Not Have a Microcurrent Facial Before You Read This Article

Posted April 21, 2022

As a person ages, the skin can start to sag and gain an older look. In the past, some of the most popular treatments that have been performed to give the skin a younger and tighter look include Botox and a facelift. One of the most popular facial rejuvenation treatments that patients are now turning to is a microcurrent facial. This treatment option uses electrical signals to improve the appearance of the skin and muscles. Even though it can work to reverse some of the visible signs of aging such as dull and drooping skin, the overall impact on the face is not as dramatic as a surgical procedure such as a facelift.

Microcurrent Facial Explained

In general, a microcurrent facial is a cosmetic procedure that involves the patient using a handheld device that delivers tiny electrical currents to the face. The microcurrents that are delivered to the face will stimulate the muscles and skin to provide an improved and more youthful look to the face. The electrical current is said to build up the muscles in the face while also tightening the skin. In addition, it is also said to stimulate collagen production (but there are no studies that confirm this fact).

The microcurrent devices used on the face has two electrodes on one end and they deliver the electrical current. The patient is awake the entire time since the treatment does not require any type of surgical procedure.

Benefits of Microcurrent Facial – Can They Help You?

Some of the additional benefits that are suggested regarding the use of microcurrent stimulation include improved muscle function, reduced inflammation, and wound healing. Plus, the treatment does not require any type of surgical incisions or anesthesia.

Microcurrent devices are available for use at the office of a licensed medical professional, or they can be purchased for use at home (but they are not as powerful as those used in medical offices). While doctors have used microcurrent treatments for multiple decades to treat Bell’s palsy, which is a form of facial paralysis, there is still some doubt among the scientific community regarding its long-term effectiveness and reliability.

There has been some limited scientific research which shows some of the possible benefits of microcurrent treatments include:

  • Stimulation of Facial Muscles – The ability to stimulate the facial muscles allows the face to gain a tighter look that also lessens the appearance of aging on the skin.
  • Better Blood Circulation – The use of electrical stimulation can improve the flow of blood to the skin. In turn, this can give the skin a healthier appearance as well as more volume and plumpness.
  • Faster Healing of Wounds – Research from 2021 has suggested that the stimulation from microcurrents might help to promote the wound healing ability of the body. The healing of wounds might be accomplished by the reduction of inflammation and increased blood circulation.
  • There has also been some research on animals that suggests electrical stimulation might be able to assist in the improved function of atrophied muscles. However, additional research is needed on human patients in order to determine if it is a viable treatment option for issues with the body such as muscle loss or weakness.

Microcurrent Facial – Possible Risks and Side Effects

One of the possible risks patients worry about regarding microcurrent facials is damage to the skin. Patients can rest easy as microcurrents are not strong enough to cause an injury so, when they are used correctly, the device should not be able to hurt or damage the skin.

Having said that, patients with heart conditions and medical devices such as pacemakers are advised to not have a microcurrent facial. In addition, women who are pregnant are advised to not have the treatment as it is not currently known if the procedure is safe for a fetus.

Some of the possible side effects of microcurrent facials include:

  • Skin Irritation
  • Skin Sensitivity
  • Tingling
  • Dry Skin
  • Facial Twitching
  • Dizziness
  • Discomfort

Anyone experiencing any of these side effects will need to consult with a doctor if the side effects do not improve and/or they can continue to be severe.

Microcurrent Facial Cost

The cost of a microcurrent facial will normally need to be covered out of pocket by the patient if it is being performed only for aesthetic reasons. If the reason for the treatment is related to a medical condition such as severe acne or a wound on the body, there is a chance insurance will cover some part of the procedure cost.

The actual cost of the treatment varies by the location where it is performed as well as any facility fees charged by the doctor. Overall, the cost averages anywhere between $200-$600 per session in the office of a doctor. The cost of an at-home device depends on the strength and size of the device and if there are any attachments that need to be used by the patient. The cost of the at-home treatment option can run anywhere from $200-$500.
