Learn the Difference Made in the Skin by Microdermabrasion

As a person gets older, their skin can be impacted by the aging process as well as the appearance of wrinkles, fine lines, sun damage, age spots, dull looking skin, scars from acne and other conditions related to the skin. Microdermabrasion uses a special applicator, which has an abrasive surface, to gently remove the outer layer of the skin to reveal newer, rejuvenated skin underneath it. In addition, microdermabrasion can be performed by spraying fine particles of aluminum oxide or sodium bicarbonate and then removing the particles with a vacuum/suction to rejuvenate the skin.

Microdermabrasion - How it is Performed

Microdermabrasion is a minimally invasive procedure that was first approved by the FDA in 1996. It can be performed in the office of a board-certified doctor. The patient is seated in a chair and the doctor uses a handheld device to gently spray the particles on the targeted area of the skin or to sand away the outer layer of the skin that is older and duller looking in appearance. Moisturizer and sunscreen should be placed on the skin at the end of the treatment.

Medical professionals have a number of options they can choose from when they are preparing to perform a microdermabrasion treatment;

  • Crystal microdermabrasion is performed using a handpiece that gently sprays fine crystals on the skin to remove dead and dull skin cells on the outer layer of the skin. The dead skin cells are immediately suctioned off by the medical professional.
  • A handpiece with a diamond-tip is used to gently exfoliate dead skin cells that are located on the top/outer layer of the skin. The dead skin cells are immediately suctioned off the treated area of the patient. This treatment is a good option for sensitive facial areas on the patient such as areas that are close to the eyes.
  • Hydradermabrasion is a newer microdermabrasion method that is performed using crystal-free exfoliation at the same time as a dermal infusion of products that stimulate the production of collagen.

Microdermabrasion Candidates and Cost

Ideal candidates for microdermabrasion treatment include:

  • People with skin imperfections or conditions such as fine lines and wrinkles, sun damage or age spots
  • A person with skin that is dull looking and wants to enjoy skin that is more refreshed and rejuvenated in its appearance
  • Patients that suffer from acne or rosacea
  • People with realistic expectations about the type of results that can be achieved through the use of microdermabrasion

The cost of a microdermabrasion treatment is anywhere from $60-$200. The total cost of the treatment depends on the condition of the skin that needs to be treated, the number of treatments that will need to be performed to achieve the desired results, the extent of the microdermabrasion treatment, any fees that are charged by the doctor or the facility and the area of the country where the microdermabrasion procedure is performed.

Microdermabrasion Recovery and Results

Once the microdermabrasion treatment is performed, patients can expect a number of side effects. These side effects include swelling, tenderness, bruising and redness. In general, all of these side effects will resolve themselves after a few hours.

In order to treat the skin after the microdermabrasion treatment, patients might want to use a moisturizer to keep the skin from becoming dry and flaky.

Patients will have little to no downtime after undergoing microdermabrasion. They will be able to resume their normal activities immediately after the procedure. Patients need to keep their skin hydrated through the use of skincare products such as the moisturizer mentioned above. They should also avoid going out in the sun after the procedure. When they do go outside, they will need to wear sunscreen in order to protect the skin as the treated areas of the skin can be more sensitive to sunlight in the first few weeks after the treatment.

The results of microdermabrasion will begin to be noticeable immediately after the treatment. As some patients will require multiple procedures to achieve their final results, the amount of time it takes to see the final results depends on the number of treatments needed by the patient. The final results also depend on the severity of the skin condition before having the procedure. The patient will enjoy skin that is rejuvenated in its appearance as well as skin that is improved in its tone and texture. The final results can last anywhere from six months to a year. In order to enjoy long-lasting results, some patients decide to undergo follow-up or maintenance treatments on a regular basis.

Microdermabrasion Consultation

The first step in the microdermabrasion process is scheduling a consultation appointment with a board-certified doctor. The doctor can examine the skin of the patient to determine if the person is an ideal candidate for microdermabrasion. In addition, the doctor can set realistic expectations as the skin of each person is different which means that the results will vary per person. Finally, the doctor will also be able to determine the best microdermabrasion treatment to help the patient achieve the desired final results.
