Discover the Skin Rejuvenation Benefits Provided by Botox

Botox is a refined form of botulinum that is injected into targeted areas in the face to refresh and rejuvenate the overall look of the face by reducing the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines. Botox is injected into a targeted muscle so neuromuscular blockers are able to limit the amount of muscle contraction in the designated area. In turn, the muscles are able to relax and reduce the amount of unwanted wrinkles. Areas of the face that respond well to Botox include areas above the nose and forehead as well as the corners of the eyes. These areas become wrinkled due to frowning and squinting on a regular basis on the part of the patient. Botox relaxes the muscles so the skin is not being continually pulled and it has time to smooth out.

Cosmetic Town TV recently visited the office of Dr. Payman Danielpour, a Beverly Hills plastic surgeon, to learn more about the Botox benefits waiting for patients that want to enjoy skin rejuvenation on the face.

Botox Benefits Explained

Before the Botox is injected into the patient, the placement of the needle is determined based on the size and depth of the area being treated. Depending on the final results desired by the patient, multiple injections might be needed to treat the area.

Botox uses a fine needle to inject the solution into the targeted areas of the face. The placement of the Botox temporarily blocks the nerve signals of the muscles to prevent them from forming fine lines and wrinkles. The treatment normally takes a few minutes to perform and is it done on an outpatient basis.

In addition to helping to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles in the face, Botox has other uses for patients:

  • Botox has been shown to relieve headaches caused by tension or muscle spasms.
  • Botox can loosen muscles that are so tight that the movement in the area of the muscle is severely limited. Botox can loosen the muscles so the patient gains some mobility.
  • Botox can also give patients suffering from axillary hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating from the armpits) some relief by blocking some of the signals that lead to secretion through the armpits.

Botox is not ideal for use in areas with wrinkles and fine lines that are not caused by muscle tightness. In other words, Botox is not a good treatment for droopy skin.

In addition, Botox will not treat nasolabial folds AKA the creases that run from the nose to each corner of the mouth. Fillers are a better choice to make the folds less shallow in appearance.

The Cost of Botox Benefits

The cost of Botox depends on the number of units used by the doctor, the price per unit charged by the doctor, the area of the country where the treatment is performed and any fees charged by the facility or the doctor. In general, the cost per syringe of Botox is $300-$1000.

Botox Recovery, Results and Risks

The recovery time after Botox injections is simple as there is very little pain involved on the part of the patient. There might be some bruising but a patient is able to return to work the same day.

The results might not be visible for a week or two after the injections. However, the Botox will already be working on preventing the muscle contractions that can cause wrinkles. As time passes, the skin will start to smooth out and the wrinkles will begin to fade. In general, the results of Botox will last anywhere from four to six months. Since the results are not permanent, patients will need to have a follow-up treatment to maintain the results.

A droopy eyelid can result if part of the Botox drips down while being administered to the eyelid. The droopy look to the eyelid is temporary but it can last for a few months before the droopy effect wears off. Patients that are suffering from a droopy eyelid can use a special eye drop to stimulate the muscles in the eyelid to correct the droopy look to the eyelid for short periods of time.

Botox has a few other risks involved in its use and they include:

  • Itching
  • Allergic reaction
  • Rash
  • Bruising or bleeding at the area where the Botox was injected
  • Dizziness
  • Infection
  • Trouble breathing
  • Swelling

Botox Benefits include the Brand Name

Some patients try and save money by using cheaper brands of Botox that they find online. These cheaper versions come from other countries and they might not be tested as thoroughly as the patented medication that is monitored by the FDA and produced by Allergan. Because the cheaper versions are not monitored as closely as the version produced by Allergan, there is the possibility of adverse reactions such as the ones listed above in the “Risks” section of this article. Patients need to make sure the version of Botox that is used by their doctor is the version that is tested and approved by the FDA.
