Butt Implants vs. Brazilian Butt Lift - Are They the Same Thing?

Are butt implants and Brazilian butt lift the same thing?

As more and more celebrities have taken to red carpet appearances and social media sites such as Instagram sporting a larger backside, the desire for butt augmentation has grown among the public. In fact, the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery has even stated that Kim Kardashian, a reality TV star and a well-known social media influencer, is one of the main reasons behind the popularity of the Brazilian butt lift AKA a BBL procedure. While many people are interested in undergoing a cosmetic surgery procedure to gain a bigger booty, they might not be completely clear on the difference between getting butt implants to gain the desired buttock augmentation results and undergoing a BBL to get a bigger backside.

Difference between Butt Implants and a Brazilian Butt Lift

When a patient has a Brazilian butt lift (BBL), the procedure is performed using the actual body fat of the patient. The patient has body fat removed from one area of the body that has extra fat that has been hard to remove and is resistant to various attempts to reduce the fat in that area. Liposuction is used to remove the fat and the most common areas of fat removal include the upper and lower back, the upper and lower abdomen and the flanks of the patient. Once the fat is removed from the targeted area on the body of the patient, the fat is processed and purified before it is ready to be injected into the buttocks of the patient to provide the desired amount of augmentation. In general, a Brazilian butt lift can give the patient a look to the booty that is more natural and perky in appearance.

Butt implants are a viable option for patients to do not have enough excess fat on any areas of their body to undergo liposuction for a Brazilian butt lift. Butt implants are made of solid silicone (as opposed to the softer silicone implants that are used for breast augmentation) and they give the patent greater volume as well as a better contour and shape to the buttocks. An incision that is around 2-3 inches in length is made in the area that is located near the tailbone (underneath the gluteus muscle). The implants are placed in the incision in order to provide the desired amount of butt augmentation.

There are times when the patient can undergo a combination of the two procedures and have butt implants placed while also undergoing fat transfer into the targeted area. The result is even greater augmentation in the backside.

No matter which of the above buttock augmentation techniques the patient decides to have performed on the body, each procedure can take around 2-3 hours to perform.

Ideal Candidates for Butt Implants or a Brazilian Butt Lift

When it comes to a Brazilian butt lift, the ideal candidate is a person with enough extra fat located on their body that can be removed, through the use of liposuction, and transferred into the buttocks. Ideal candidates should be in good health and have realistic expectations about the results they can receive from the procedure. In general, patients that have buttocks that are viewed as being flat, small, asymmetrical or sagging can benefit from the results provided by a BBL.

On the other hand, the ideal candidate for butt implants is a person that is not happy with the overall size, shape or proportions of their butt but the person does not have enough excess fat on the body to have it transferred to the buttocks. Much like a Brazilian butt lift, the person must be in good overall health and have realistic expectations about the final results.

Brazilian Butt Lift and Butt Implants Recovery and Results

Patients can return to work around 10-12 days after a Brazilian butt lift or butt implants. They should refrain from doing any kind of strenuous activity or sports activities anywhere from 4-6 weeks after the procedure. Patients can also expect to experience some bruising, swelling or tenderness in the area of the buttocks where the butt implants were placed or the transferred fat was injected into the buttocks.

Patients can expect to have drains placed to get rid of excess fluid that occurs during the healing process of both procedures.

Patients that have a Brazilian butt lift can expect to wear compression garments in order to provide support to the treated area and promote the healing process. If necessary, they can have massages after the surgery to reduce the amount of fluid they retain while also promoting the healing process.

No matter which butt augmentation technique a patient decides to undergo to gain the desired results, both a BBL and butt implants will show immediate results after being performed on a person. The final results of having butt implants placed will take about 3-4 months for them to be visible to the naked eye. The final results of a Brazilian butt lift will be seen within 6-8 months after the cosmetic surgery in performed.
