More than $10 Billion Spent on the Booming Cosmetic Surgery Industry

Posted March 08, 2018

An old saying goes “beauty is only skin deep”. The global cosmetic surgery industry continues to reach deep into the pockets of consumers as over $10.7-billion dollars was spent in 2017 on cosmetic procedures worldwide.

A report released earlier this year at the IMCAS beauty industry conference in Paris revealed “a strong dynamism for this sector in a difficult economic environment for several geographical areas.”  The amount of money spent on procedures that nip, lift and tighten patients grew more than 8\\% from 2016. Experts are expecting the amount of money spent on the cosmetic surgery industry to reach $11.6-billion in 2018.

The new report tracked the sales of various cosmetic surgery items including:

However, the amount of money spent on these items is not close to what patients spend on cosmetic surgery procedures.

According to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS), Americans spent more than $15-billion on beauty procedures in 2016. This is an 11\\% rise from the previous year.

ASAPS president Daniel Mills says the rise in spending is due to technological innovations, a healthier economy and the desire of baby boomers to remain competitive in the workplace.

Some of the most popular procedures include fat grafting, breast lifts and facial fillers. In addition, labiaplasty grew by 23\\% in the United States. Labiaplasty involves trimming the “inner lips”, or labia minora, of the vaginal opening to create a smoother vagina.

The International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ISAPS) said the United States, Brazil, Japan, Italy, and Mexico accounted for 41.4\\% of the cosmetic procedures in the world. According to ISAPS, breast augmentation remained the most popular surgical procedure in 2016 while penis enlargement was the least popular cosmetic procedure in 2016. The most popular non-surgical procedure continues to be Botox which ranked at number one.
