What is Cosmetic Dentistry?

When it comes to having a dentist correct the look of the teeth, as well as the general appearance of the mouth, there are multiple techniques that dentists can perform to achieve this goal. Cosmetic dentists can correct both the look and functionality of teeth that are chipped, cracked, discolored or unevenly spaced. Some of the most popular treatment options that patients undergo on a regular basis include:

  • Dental implants are artificial roots that are surgically placed in the jaw, along with a prosthetic tooth on top of it, in order to replace missing teeth. It is essentially a small screw made of titanium. The implant is placed into the jawbone and it serves as the root of the missing tooth. The top part of the implant, which is the part that protrudes from the bone, is where an artificial tooth crown will be attached.
  • Dental bonding is when a composite filling material is applied to a damaged tooth in order to create a tooth that is natural-looking and restored. A special blue light is used to harden a putty-like material to the tooth and bond them together.
  • Porcelain veneers are ceramic shells placed on the front of the teeth to cover cracks or chips. They alter the color and shape of the teeth and improve the smile.
  • Dental crowns are created after a mold is made of a badly damaged tooth. The crown is placed on the tooth to repair it. Dental crowns are generally used to cover a tooth weakened by cavities, large fillings or fractures. The dental crown will cover most, or all, of a damaged tooth.
  • Teeth whitening treatments are performed to remove stains and lighten the teeth by making them look brighter to others viewing the teeth.
  • Gum contouring is a treatment that reshapes the gum line to enhance the smile. Patients that feel their gums are sitting too low, or high, on the teeth, can have the gum line reshaped and improved.
  • Dental bridges fill-in a space where one or more teeth are missing. Dental bridges need a bridge abutment or crown to be placed on the teeth that are next to the missing teeth. The artificial tooth is also called a pontic and it bridges the gap while also restoring the teeth.
  • Inlays and Onlays are restorations that are used to repair damaged teeth. An inlay sits in the actual tooth while an onlay covers the edges of the tooth and also comes halfway down to the gum line. A crown also covers the whole tooth all the way down to the gum line.

All of the above procedures result in a mouth that is youthful and rejuvenated in its appearance. Patients should schedule a consultation appointment with a board-certified doctor in order to be properly examined before the decision is made regarding which cosmetic dentistry technique will give the desired results that are long-lasting and natural in appearance.
