New Hair Loss Cure is Close to Being a Reality

Posted May 22, 2015

Did you know the average person loses up to one hundred hairs per day?  How would you feel if that number kept growing and growing by the hundreds until you discovered a bald spot?  What if you lost so much hair per day that your bald spot progressed to complete baldness?

There’s hope on the way for those suffering from hair loss thanks to a team of researchers at Sanford-Burnham Medical Research Institute.  They’ve developed a method that causes human pluripotent stem cells (which are capable of differentiating into many different cell types) to individualize into dermal papilla cells (which help nourish hair follicles). It is a promising new procedure that offers patients the option of growing new hair instead of simply transplanting them.

To put that information into simpler terms, the stem cell research conducted by the team promoted hair growth when transplanted into a test group of mice. Showing the treatment’s potential of working successfully on human patients.

According to findings published in January in the journal PLOS One, “We have developed a method using human pluripotent stem cells to create new cells capable of initiating human hair growth," said the study’s lead author Dr. Alexey Terskikh.

The report goes on to say their new method improves on current techniques being used to transplant hair follicles to different parts of the head.  By utilizing stem cells from the patient, the research team feels they’ll have unlimited cells for transplants.

While this treatment promises to help those without traditional hair transplants options available to them, there is no word on when the technique will be available for use by the general public. It is essential for this procedure to undergo extensive testing before it is available to the public to prevent unnecessary complications.
