Plastic Surgery by the Numbers - 2020 Cosmetic Surgery Statistics

Posted June 07, 2021
Cosmetic surgery statistics for 2020

It is an understatement to say that 2020 was an odd year for all businesses across the United States. The majority of companies had to close for varying lengths of time due to COVID-19 safety restrictions designed to keep the public safe during the coronavirus pandemic. Even with the shutdown that plastic surgery offices endured all over the country, the American Society of Plastic Surgeons still kept track of data that showed the increases and decreases in specific cosmetic procedures throughout the year. Curious which cosmetic surgery procedures were the most popular throughout the past year? If so, take a look below for some of the recently released 2020 cosmetic surgery statistics.

Plastic Surgery Procedures – General Look at the Numbers

The cosmetic surgery numbers released by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons shows a range of declines in the statistics for both surgical and minimally invasive cosmetic surgery procedures (as a result of the 2020 pandemic closures). It should be noted that the statistics were influenced by the amount of time offices were closed in certain areas of the country as well as the regional restrictions put in place by local officials.

In general, Botox and soft-tissue fillers were the most popular minimally invasive treatment choices. However, the biggest surgical increase was seen by buttock implants as their popularity was up an impressive 22\\\\% (from 970 to 1179).

When asked by Bloomberg.com why butt implants gained so much in popularity, Dr. Ava Shamban, a dermatologist based in Los Angeles, said the fact that people were stuck at home played a big part in their decision once “shelter in place” restrictions were lifted. She referred to the desire for butt implants as “modern-day ‘secretary spread’” or a “general flattening” of the buttocks. She also cited Instagram as a reason for the growing popularity of this buttock plastic surgery procedure. “Presumably, seeing the higher, tighter rounder assets on social media or any number of reality distractions, had patients researching and ultimately scheduling procedures to give their bottom line a much-needed boost.”

On the other hand, the biggest drop was seen in hair transplant surgery as hair restoration saw a large decline of 60\\\\% from 2019. Overall, the hair transplant numbers went from 24,000 to less than 10,000. Bloomberg.com asked New York-based facial and hair plastic surgeon, Dr. Gary Linkov, about the big decline in hair transplant numbers. Dr. Linkov said the decrease was due, in part, to regulatory measures that resulted in the decline of “’turnkey operations’ such as NeoGraft or SmartGraft, where plastic surgeons buy a machine that comes with technicians on demand.”

Top Five Minimally Invasive Cosmetic Surgery Procedures in 2020

When compiling the data showing the most popular minimally invasive cosmetic surgery procedures, the results for the Top Five treatment options were as follows:

  1. Botox (even though this was the leading minimally invasive choice, it was still down 13\\\\% from 2019)
  2. Fillers (down 11\\\\% from 2019)
  3. Laser Skin Resurfacing (down 8\\\\% from 2019)
  4. Chemical Peels (down 33\\\\% from 2019)
  5. Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) (down 12\\\\% from 2019)

While it might seem concerning to see all of these treatment options down from 2019, it is important to remember that there was not a full twelve months of treatment data thanks to medical offices being closed due to orders from national, state, and local governments.

Top Five Cosmetic Surgical Procedures in 2020

When compiling the data showing the most popular cosmetic surgical procedures, the results for the Top Five treatment options were as follows:

  1. Rhinoplasty (even though this was the leading cosmetic surgical choice, it was still down 3\\\\% from 2019)
  2. Blepharoplasty (Eyelid Surgery) (down 8\\\\% from 2019)
  3. Facelift (down 11\\\\% from 2019)
  4. Liposuction (down 20\\\\% from 2019)
  5. Breast Augmentation (down 33\\\\% from 2019)

Just like the numbers listed above for the minimally invasive treatments, it is important to keep in mind that the decrease in the total numbers occurred because there was not a full twelve months of treatment data available thanks to medical offices being closed due to national, state, and local orders.

Plastic Surgery Procedures in 2021 – What to Expect

The first item to keep in mind when plastic surgery statistics are complied at the end of this year is the fact that (hopefully) all twelve months of the year will be reflected in the data. While COVID-19 is still a major health and safety issue that patients should be concerned about in the coming months, many mask mandates across the country are being lifted as the public starts to adjust to once again living a “normal life”. While not every cosmetic procedure performed by doctors decreased in number in 2020, there was still a large number of procedures that decreased in the total number performed in the last year. With the ability to compile and examine twelve months of data at the end of 2021, it stands to reason that the decreases seen in 2020 will be offset and the cosmetic surgery procedures listed in this article will once again show an increase in popularity.
