Top 6 Rhinoplasty Myths

Posted February 08, 2016

There are many myths and misconceptions about rhinoplatsy. Most people are aware that rhinoplasty is surgery performed on the nose.  Beyond that, there are six myths that need to be cleared up in order for patients to make an informed decision about having rhinoplasty surgery:

  1. A bump on the nose is easy to remove – The answer to this myth is “no”.  Rhinoplatsy is a complex and challenging operation that is more than simply removing a bump on the nose. The surgeon must make sure the nose and the face match as well as checking that all sections of the nose are in harmony with each other. The act of removing a bump from the nose brings other factors into play for the doctor. The surgeon also has to change the tip of the nose to make sure it doesn’t appear to be sticking out too far from the face. Also, changing the tip often involves changing the bridge of the nose as well so it doesn’t appear to be too wide or high. A great attention to detail is important when performing a rhinoplasty procedure so the nose will be balanced and in harmony with the rest of the face.
  2. Rhinoplasty is covered by insurance – The answer to this question is “yes and no”. As a general rule, cosmetic rhinoplasty is not covered by most insurance plans since it is not a surgery that is medically necessary for the patient. On the other hand, rhinoplatsy can be covered by insurance if the surgery serves a medical purpose. For example, if the patient is having problems breathing due to an issue such as a deviated septum, this is considered a functional issue for the patient. In cases where the issue is a genuine medical problem, there is a good chance that the medical portion of the surgery will be covered by insurance.
  3. Rhinoplasty can allow a patient to have the nose of any celebrity – The answer to this myth varies between “no and maybe”. Any patient who wants to have a rhinoplasty procedure needs to schedule a consultation with a surgeon. It is up to the surgeon to set realistic results expectations. No two faces are alike and no two noses are alike. Even if the surgeon can give the patient a nose like their favorite celebrity, that particular nose might not be appropriate for the person. While Brad Pitt or Natalie Portman might have nice noses, the structure and size of their noses are not the right size or shape for some patients. The changes to the nose must be fitting for the face as well as the ethnicity of the patient.
  4. A nose job will need to be revised in the future – This myth is also answered with a “yes and no”. While rhinoplasty should be an operation that only needs to be performed once on a patient, there could be some issues with healing and anatomy that will need to be addressed by a revision surgery.
  5. I can’t afford a rhinoplasty surgery – The answer to this myth is “no” thanks to many doctor offering finance plans. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, the average cost for a rhinoplasty surgery is a little less than $5000. While this expense is beyond the means of many to make in one payment, many medical offices work with third party financing companies to help patients afford surgery.
  6. Rhinoplasty is a surgery for vain people – It is true that some people undergo rhinoplasty because they are concerned about how their nose looks to others as well as their overall appearance to others. This is not true for a majority of the patients who decide to have rhinoplasty. Some patients want to undergo rhinoplasty because of a trauma to the nose that impairs their breathing or has caused a significant change in its appearance. Others might have been teased or bullied in school about their nose and wish to make a change in order to help their self-esteem. Finally, there are patients who are simply looking to create a balanced and harmonious appearance between their nose and the rest of their face.
