Plastic Surgery Tops Teen Back to School Lists

Posted August 31, 2015

It’s back to school time across the United States.  Parents are making sure their kids have all of the necessary back to school supplies to start a new school year.  Pencils, pens, backpacks, folders, calculators and new clothes are just a few of the items necessary to make the first day of school a successful one.  There is one other back to school item that has become a “must have” on the list of many teenagers as they begin the new school year.  What item is at the top of so many lists this year?

Plastic surgery.

Many teenagers are starting the school year with more than new books and backpacks. They are returning to school with a different look.  The “new looks” range from a new set of breasts to plumper lips to a new nose. Many students had their procedures performed during the summer when they spend less time around their school friends.  Summertime also gives students a longer period of time to recover from their procedures.

The American Society of Plastic Surgeons reported that almost 64,000 teenagers had a cosmetic surgery procedure in 2013.  The growth in teen plastic surgery procedures can be traced to a variety of factors.

  • Celebrity influence – Many celebrities that teenagers admire have admitted to plastic surgery procedures in the past year.  Reality TV star Kylie Jenner confessed to having lip fillers. “Modern Family” star Ariel Winter recently opened up about having breast reduction surgery.  Winter felt that too many people were making a big deal about her large breasts which led her to feel sexualized and treated like an object by others. Iggy Azalea has come out in the open about her breast implants and nose job. Seeing these celebrities admit to having cosmetic surgery procedures has a big influence on the average teenager who wants to have a procedure.
  • Social Media - Seeing their friends, as well as celebrities, showing off their looks on social media can have a big impact on teenagers.  Teens see a certain style or a new look on a person and want to achieve that look for themselves.  Social media also has an immediate feedback aspect that can pressure teens to try and look their best at all times in order to not be ridiculed by others.

It’s important to remember that not all teenage plastic surgery procedures are motivated by trying to look like celebrities seen on TV and red carpet events.  For example, a breast reduction surgery is a perfectly acceptable procedure for a teenage girl.  Larger breasts can cause back and neck pain and breast reduction can help relieve that pain. On the other hand, there are many procedures that physicians consider inappropriate for teenagers to undergo at such an early age.  Some examples of these procedures include breast augmentation and liposuction.

When deciding if plastic surgery is appropriate for a teenager, surgeons have to take into account the age of the patient and the body changes a teen goes through as he or she gets older.  The body of a teenager changes as he or she hits puberty. Performing surgery before a teen finishes growing can lead to complications that need to be fixed by another surgery later in life.

Also, it’s important to determine if the teen wants the surgery because of a legitimate medical need or if the teen wants to have a procedure due to outside influences. Is the desire for a cosmetic procedure fueled by wanting to look like a celebrity, a desire to please a boyfriend or girlfriend or peer pressure? What a teen admires, or likes, changes as they get older so many doctors will not perform plastic surgery on teens and will ask them to wait until they are older before undergoing a procedure.

The desire among teens to have plastic surgery does not appear to be slowing down anytime in the near future.  As long as social media and gossip websites continue to show photos of celebrities and their latest plastic surgery procedures, teenagers will want to get a new look for themselves. In fact, many of those “new looks” are being showcased right now at schools across the country.  The average person might have to look twice to determine if they are experiencing a celebrity sighting or just seeing a teenager sporting a celebrity style thanks to plastic surgery.
