An Overseas Botox Debate

Posted May 09, 2017

The debate about non-health professionals administering Botox to patients in the United Kingdom is the subject of an emergency motion at the upcoming 6th National Aesthetic Nursing Conference. The event, to be held at the Royal Liver Building in Liverpool, is organized by the Journal of Aesthetic Nursing (JAN). The emergency motion seeks to condemn the injection of both Botox and dermal fillers by non-health professionals such as hairdressers and beauty therapists who offer skin treatment and advice.

A group of aesthetic nurses plans to put forth a motion that declares they have “no confidence in the present situation in the UK, whereby non-health groups are providing facial cosmetic injectable medicines, commonly referred to as Botox and fillers.”

The person in charge of proposing the motion is a Consultant Editor of JAN, Cheryl Barton. She is also an Aesthetic Nurse and Managing Director, Aesthetika, Sheffield. Barton says the practice of non-health professionals giving the injectable medicines does not happen in any other country until there is evidence that the person performing the injections has been trained properly.

She went on to add that patients should consult with a doctor or nurse before making the decision to have a treatment as her group has no confidence in the training offered to those in non-health professions. Furthermore, the motion will ask that beauticians be prevented from being able to administer the injections in the future.

The motion is being supported by many involved in the debate. There are some who feel that the United Kingdom is not living up to international standards. They feel the UK is taking shortcuts that could prove to be dangerous to the health of patients by allowing fillers and Botox to be provided by non-health professionals who do not have a good understanding or knowledge of human anatomy. This lack of comprehensive knowledge about the human body could lead to complications that might provide serious health issues down the road for those who receive Botox injections.
