Dermal Fillers for the lips - what you should know

Whether you call it cosmetic lip augmentation or “pout plumping”, using dermal fillers to plump the lips is a very popular treatment. Before you decide to make your lips bigger and bolder, here are three things you should know about lip fillers:

Research is important – One of the most important first steps you can take is doing proper research. It takes a great deal of skill, and even an artistic flair, to deliver results that look natural to others. Plus, an experienced doctor can perform the treatment while making sure you are comfortable in an accredited facility. Ask to see “before and after” photos of actual patients from the doctor. You also need to be clear about the results you desire so there is no confusion while the injections are being administered. Being clear about the results you want will also help you avoid getting lips that are overfilled.

Don’t choose the lowest price – There are some doctors who have special offers and deals to help get patients in the door. You need to remember that a lower price for the treatment doesn’t mean that you will get the same quality results and care as a person that pays a higher price. Make sure the fillers you are paying for, at whatever price, are quality products you have heard of during your research, Juvederm and Restylane are just a few of the most commonly used fillers. Don’t take the chance on an “off brand product” simply to save a few dollars. You might end up spending more money trying to revise the results of the previous/cheaper treatment.

Fillers do not last forever – The hyaluronic acid used in fillers will eventually be absorbed by the body. This means the filler will eventually disappear completely as will the visible results from the filler. You will need to visit your doctor again to have a follow-up treatment to maintain your results. When performed properly the first time, or during a follow-up treatment, fillers can give your lips a subtle change that looks natural as opposed to lips that are so big they look like “trout lips”.
