Meghan Markle - Number One Requested Nose

Posted December 01, 2017

Rhinoplasty is a surgery that changes the shape, size and look of the nose. In most patients, the motivation for rhinoplasty might be to change the appearance of the nose as well as improve the breathing ability of the patient. When it comes to celebrity inspiration for rhinoplasty, Meghan Markle is the standing out as the most popular choice among females.

Meghan Markle - Most Desired Nose for Rhinoplasty Patients

Many rhinoplasty patients turn to celebrities for inspiration when it comes to picking a new look for their nose. According to a plastic surgeon in New York, one of the most popular nose choices belongs to the wife of Prince Harry.  Meghan Markle, the Duchess of Sussex is an American-born member of the British royal family and a former actress. According to Dr. Stephen T. Greenberg, MD, there has been an increase in the number of requests for noses that look like the one that belongs to the “Suits” star.

Dr. Greenberg told E! News that” patients started coming to see me about six months ago requesting Meghan Markle’s nose. As things between her and Prince Harry started to heat up, attention definitely followed.” He added that “she is probably one of the top, if not the No.1, request I get. Up until recently, the Kardashians were probably the most popular celebrity cosmetic requests.”

Potential Rhinoplasty Patients Prepare for Surgery

Before scheduling your rhinoplasty procedure, you must meet with your surgeon to discuss important factors that determine if you are an ideal candidate or not. The factors that need to be checked include:

  • Your medical history - A patient's medical history is a crucial factor that determines the patient's candidacy. During a consultation, your doctor will ask questions about your medical history including a history of nasal obstruction, surgeries and any medications you take on a regular basis. If you have a bleeding disorder, such as hemophilia, you may not be a candidate for rhinoplasty.
  • Discussion of expectations - As important as the physical aspect of preparing for surgery is, the psychological aspect shouldn't be ignored. Prior to the procedure, it is of paramount importance that you prepare your mind for the changes you are going to make to the look of your nose. You should talk about your motivations and expectations. The doctor will explain what rhinoplasty can and can't do for you and what your final results might be after surgery. It is very important that you are open with your surgeon about your desires and goals.
  • Food and medications - Foods and medications taken by potential patients is also a very important factor that could impact the outcome of the procedure. Prior to the procedure, patients are advised to abstain from medications containing aspirin or ibuprofen. These medications may increase bleeding. Herbal remedies and over-the-counter supplements should also be avoided. Smoking slows the healing process after surgery and may make you more likely to get an infection so potential patients who smoke need to stop two weeks prior to surgery.

Rhinoplasty and Anesthesia

There are two major types of anesthesia used during rhinoplasty and the choice depends on the surgeon's preference and how complex the procedure is to perform.

  • Local anesthesia with sedation - This type of anesthesia is usually used in an outpatient setting. It's limited to a specific area of the body. The surgeon injects a pain-numbing medication into the nasal tissues and sedates you with medication injected through an intravenous (IV) line. This makes you groggy but not fully asleep.
  • General anesthesia - You receive the anesthesia by inhaling it or through a small tube (IV line) placed in a vein in your hand, neck or chest. General anesthesia impacts your entire body and causes you to be unconscious during surgery. General anesthesia requires a breathing tube to be used by the patient during surgery.

The procedure can be done inside the nose or through a small external cut (incision) at the base of the nose (between the nostrils). The bone and cartilage underneath the skin will most likely be readjusted.

The shape of the nasal bones or cartilage can be changed in several ways depending on how much cartilage needs to be removed or added and the structure of the nose. For small changes, the surgeon may use cartilage taken from deeper inside the nose or from your ear. For larger changes, the surgeon can use cartilage from your rib or bone from other parts of your body. After these changes are made, the surgeon places the skin and tissue of the nose back in place and stitches the incisions in your nose. If the wall between the two sides of the nose (septum) is bent or crooked (deviated), the surgeon can also correct it to improve your breathing ability.

What to Expect after Rhinoplasty

Rhinoplasty is a major procedure so time for recovery is required after the procedure. Depending on the patient, the recovery time may last for a few weeks to a couple of months. During recovery, it's very important patients refrain from strenuous activities. The results achieved by rhinoplasty are permanent as long as all post-op requirements are followed diligently.
