Men are having breast reduction surgery

According to new statistics from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, more men are deciding to go under the knife. It might surprise many people to discover one procedure that men are having is surgery to remove their breasts.

Let’s Look at the Numbers

While the numbers show there has been a rather large increase in the number of men having plastic surgery, the one statistic that might catch the eye of the public is the increase in the number of men having male breast reduction. The number has increased around 30\\% in the past five years and is performed to treat a condition known as gynecomastia. This condition causes men to have swollen breast tissue in a number of areas. The swollen breast tissue can appear behind their nipples which, in turn, can cause them to protrude outward. The swollen breast tissue can also impact the chest and make a male patient look like he actually has breasts like a female.

Man Boobs

The term “man boobs” has been in public use for years and is often used in a manner that pokes fun at men with the condition. The men who suffer from the condition do not consider the condition to be funny and it can be found in as many as 30\\% of men. This statistic comes from a 2014 study about the condition.

There are a few different reasons men can suffer from gynecomastia. They include hereditary reasons and even a hormonal imbalance. Man boobs can also be caused by the aging process, patients being obese or the taking of medications that can affect the production of hormones.

Why More Men are addressing the Issue

If the condition has been around for so long, why are so many men now making the decision to address the issue? Medical experts vary in their opinion which means there are multiple reasons for the growing number of men wanting to get rid of their enlarged breasts.

One reason men are having plastic surgery is the fact that plastic surgery is now viewed as being more acceptable for both men and women.

Plus, there are now more options available to patients who want to have the condition treated by a surgeon. Some of the medical options available to male patients with man boobs include:

  • Liposuction
  • Liposuction that only targets the removal of the breast glands
  • Traditional reduction surgery that involves the removal of skin that is hanging, breast tissue and some of the visible breasts
  • Breast gland removal that is performed along with skin tightening

In addition, male patients want to redcue their man boobs because of

  • A desire to look good at all times on social media
  • The wish to look younger and in better shape
  • A desire to stay active and respected in the workforce

Although all of the above reasons are relevant and cover a wide range of patients in many different age groups, gynecomastia can happen at any age and this means that patients of all age groups are looking for help with the issue. In general, many medical professionals say they see two main age groups in their offices. They include young men in their late teens and early twenties and men that are in their fifties or sixties.

What to do Before the Surgery

Before having the surgery, patients need to schedule a consultation with a board-certified surgeon who can examine a person and determine the severity of the condition. Plus, the doctor can assess if the enlarged breasts are the result of hereditary or hormonal issues, the aging process or weight loss or gain. Once the cause of the problem is determined, the doctor can make a plan to address and resolve the issue in order to achieve the desired results.

Once a male patient decides to have the procedure, there is little downtime following the surgery. After the surgery is performed, it is vital that the patient follow any post-op instructions assigned to him by the surgeon. Following the instructions assigned by the doctor can help ensure a smooth recovery and results that can last a lifetime.

While the phrase “man boobs” might not be disappearing from the English language anytime soon, the important thing to remember is that the condition can be treated and resolved to the satisfaction of the patient.
