Learn how Liposuction Removes Fat that is Hard to Eliminate

Getting the body into the shape desired by a person is not always the easiest task to accomplish. Even when following a proper diet and exercise routine, some patients cannot lose the amount of desired fat from the body. This is where liposuction comes in handy to help contour the body and get rid of fat that is stubborn and resistant to other methods of removal.

Cosmetic Town TV is here to help patients learn more about liposuction with a Beauty Procedure 101 about the treatment:

What is Liposuction?

Liposuction is a procedure that reshapes the body by breaking up fat cells in the targeted area. The fat cells are then suctioned out of the body or they are naturally excreted from the body. There are various types of liposuction available to patients and they include:

  • Traditional liposuction is when a cannula is placed in a surgical incision. The cannula is moved back and forth to liquefy and destroy the fat cells so they can easily be removed from the treated area.
  • Tumescent lipo is when a large amount of fluid is injected into the area being treated. The injection of the fluid makes it easier to remove the fat using a suction device attached to a cannula.
  • Ultrasonic-Assisted Lipo (UAL) liquefies fat by targeting the fat with ultrasonic waves. This treatment option is best used on areas such as the back, upper abdomen and sides of the body.
  • Laser liposuction, AKA liposculpture, uses laser energy to break apart the fat cells so they can be removed using a cannula.

Ideal candidates for liposuction include patients with small pockets of fat that are resistant to exercise and diet as well as men and women that are within 30\\% of their ideal body weight. In addition, patients should have skin that is firm and elastic along with good muscle tone.

How Much Does Liposuction Cost?

The cost of liposuction depends on the type of lipo performed and the total amount of fat that is removed by the surgeon. The cost also depends on any fees charged by the doctor or the facility and the area of the country where it is performed. Here are the costs of the lipo techniques listed above:

  • Traditional liposuction costs anywhere from $3000-$5500
  • Tumescent lipo is between $3000-$9500
  • Laser liposuction costs anywhere between $2500-$7500
  • UAL costs anywhere from $5500-$8500

Liposuction Recovery and Results

The recovery time from liposuction is often the same for all of the techniques listed above. Patients can expect to experience some swelling, bruising and soreness after the procedure. The total amount of recovery time depends on the size of the treatment area and the amount of fat cells that are removed during the procedure.

In general, the recovery time is about two weeks for each technique. A compression garment will be worn on the treated area to maintain the swelling and aid in the shrinking of skin. In addition, small drainage tubes might be placed under the skin to get rid of excess fluid for a few days after surgery. Patients can return to light duty work in a few days and regular activities can be resumed in two to three weeks.

Most patients begin to see some results after the majority of the swelling has subsided. The final results will be seen within six to nine months and the fat cells that have been removed cannot come back.

How to Decide Which Type of Liposuction to Undergo

It can be difficult for patients to make the final decision about which type of liposuction procedure to undergo. Each of the techniques results in a contoured look that is tighter and firmer than the look of the area before the surgery. In order to achieve the desired results, patients should schedule a consultation appointment with a board-certified surgeon that specializes in the different types of liposuction and also performs them on a regular basis. The doctor can perform a thorough examination of the patient and discuss the desired final results with the person. The examination and consultation appointment will help the doctor determine which liposuction procedure will allow patients to achieve their desired final results.
