K-Pop Group Combines Plastic Surgery and Music

Posted April 24, 2017

One of the most popular forms of music around the world is K-pop from South Korea. For those who have never heard of it, “K-pop” is an abbreviation for Korean pop and is a style of music that includes hip hop, pop, electronic and rock music. Another popular aspect of the culture in South Korea is plastic surgery. As recently as 2014, South Korea was the plastic surgery capital of the world with the most plastic surgeries per capita on the entire planet. In fact, South Korea had over 980,000 reported operations in 2014.

The worlds of K-pop and plastic surgery recently met when Six Bomb, a K-pop girl group, went under the knife and shared the results in their latest singles. The singles are titled “Becoming Prettier” with the subtitles “Before” and “After” on the two singles. “Becoming Prettier Before” was released in February with a music video that featured the group at a plastic surgery consultation appointment. Earlier this month, the video for the second single (“Becoming Prettier After”) made it clear the four members of the group did undergo plastic surgery. The video features the group showing off their new appearance while comparing their new look to their appearance before surgery.

In an interview with a Korean news outlet, the members of Six Bomb said they spent around 100-million KRW (Korean Republic Won) on their plastic surgery. The amount of KRW is equal to $88,600 in American money.  During the interview, Six Bomb member Dane said:

“I did not hate doing cosmetic surgery. When I saw my face on the screen, there were some disadvantages and I had to do cosmetic surgery.”

Regarding the results of her surgery, Dana says she is 100\\% satisfied and the surgery gave her more confidence.

When asked about the procedures they had for the project, three of the members said they had extensive work from the waist up but declined to go into specifics. The fourth member of the group said she had a nose job. They also shared the fact that they came up with the idea to have plastic surgery that would be included as part of their singles and videos.

As mentioned above, the citizens of South Korea are not shy about having plastic surgery to change their appearance. However, the members of Six Bomb are likely the first group to use cosmetic surgery as a way to market their music and their image. Depending on how this marketing strategy is received, they might not be the last K-pop stars to change their appearance while documenting it for the world to see.
