Hand Injections to Fight the Signs of Aging - Get all the Details!

How to stop aging in the hands

When the subject of fighting the signs of aging is discussed with a doctor, there are numerous options that can be discussed. From a full facelift to fillers and Botox, there are multiple cosmetic surgery procedures that can be utilized by a doctor. However, the latest trend involves the injection of hyaluronic acid into the hands.

Why are Patients Getting Injections in Their Hands?

According to the International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, there were 23,000,000 cosmetic procedures performed in the year 2016. The organization reported that, out of all of these procedures, almost 8,000,000 of them involved the use of injectables such as Botox and hyaluronic acid (fillers).

One of the areas where patients are looking to see a good amount of improvement is the hands. As part of their effort to have hands that look younger thanks to the elimination of wrinkles and other signs of the aging process, people are getting hyaluronic acid injected. The treatment works to reduce signs of aging such as the appearance of protruding veins as well as tendons and sunspots.

As of this moment, the only treatment that has been approved by the FDA is Restylane Lyft. It has been said that Restylane Lyft can be used for the purpose of "restoring fullness to the back of the hands, providing more youthful-looking skin."

In the past, Restylane Lyft has been used to add volume to the lips. Because it contains hyaluronic acid, which naturally occurs in the body’s joints and skin, there is no need for pre-treatment allergy testing. Hyaluronic acid binds with water molecules upon injection and provides long lasting results. Hyaluronic acid is considered a very safe way to add shape, symmetry, volume and structure to the treated area.

Who is having the Treatment?

Recent reports show the procedure is most popular with both men and women above the age of 40. As a person gets older, he or she can begin to hate the appearance of their hands because of sports and tendons and wrinkles that remind them they are getting older.

How to Gain FDA approval

In order to be approved by the FDA, the overall benefits of a substance used for treatment must be proven to outweigh any risks. While there has been some concern over scientific evidence that shows hyaluronic acid can promote cancer stem cells, most cosmetic surgeons remain confident that its use as an injectable on patients is safe.

Are there are Side Effects?

Doctors that perform this procedure report that injections in the hand are well-tolerated by patients and the injections are profiled as being very low risk. There are a few common side effects and they include bruising and some temporary swelling. The actual treatment only takes about 10 minutes per hand and the healing process begins almost immediately.

Training is Important

Even though the treatment is viewed as being very low risk in nature, it does take proper training in order to achieve the desired results. There can be some risks and complications if the procedure is handled by an untrained professional. For example, hyaluronic acid fillers can potentially be injected into blood vessels instead of just being injected into the soft tissue that is located below the skin. An injection of hyaluronic acid into the blood vessels can result in scars, numbness and the permanent discoloration of the treated area and even a decreased range of motion.  In very extreme cases, the injections can cause a patient to go blind.

Find a Board-Certified Physician

The risks listed above are the main reasons that patients should only have the treatment performed by a board-certified physician. A board-certified physician has undergone the proper training that is required in order to safely perform the treatment and provide the desired results. Patients are encouraged to perform research and make sure that the doctor they have in mind has undergone the proper training. Patients should also ask to see “before and after” photos of patients who previously had the treatment performed by the physician in question. Finally, patients can always ask to speak to previous patients in order to get a better idea of how the doctor treats his or her patients and if they are happy with the final results.
