Fake Doctor Gets Prison Sentence

Posted June 15, 2017

A surgical assistant in Denver who posed as a plastic surgeon was recently sentenced to six years in prison. Carlos Hernandez Fernandez of Denver was sentenced after pleading guilty to charges of unauthorized practice of a physician, second-degree felony assault and criminal impersonation.

The 37-year-old had performed medical procedures on more than 50 victims who were under the impression that Fernandez was a licensed doctor. His impersonation of a licensed medical professional dates back to at least January 2015. According to the office of Beth McCann, the Denver District Attorney, the procedures Fernandez performed include tummy tucks and facelifts while using little to no anesthesia on the patients.

Fernandez was initially charged with 15 counts against four victims by the DA’s office. However, more victims started coming forward which increased the number of charges against him. The total charges were 126 counts with more than 50 victims. Under a plea deal struck between Fernandez and local authorities, he pleaded guilty to one count of unauthorized practice, one count of assault and one count of impersonation.

In total, he is required to pay $189,222 in restitution to his victims. Once his prison sentence is over, Fernandez will have three years of parole as the result of one count of second-degree assault. The three years of parole will be followed consecutively by six years of probation. The six years of probation is the result of the counts of unauthorized practice of a physician and criminal impersonation.

The DA’s office has also stated that, if more victims come forward with documentation against Fernandez, further restitution will have to be paid.
