Does Plastic Surgery Play a Part in Workplace Promotions?

Posted October 26, 2017

Does having plastic surgery help you get a promotion in the workplace?

Marie, a 27-year-old woman from Los Angeles, recently told moneyish.com that her web traffic increased 40\\% in the past year after spending $10,000 on lip fillers and a nose job in order to create what she considers a “more flattering profile”.

Marie told the website, “I had such low confidence in myself, and I hated my features so much, that I didn’t want to do a lot of photo shoots. And I never did video,” she told Moneyish. She has hated her features since breaking her nose in high school. She had rhinoplasty but hated the results so she got a revision procedure. She added “Now I love being in front of the camera, and so my career is skyrocketing.”

While plastic surgery will never take the place of work experience and a resume filled with skills that fit the marketplace, the way a person looks still plays a part in the hiring process. According to a study conducted by John Hopkins University, people with nose jobs are considered to be successful while looking more attractive to others. The co-author of the study, Dr. Lisa Ishii, said “While we are not suggesting that [a nose job] is the only way to improve one’s appearance, improving our attractiveness and health as compared to others conveys a competitive advantage.”
