Delayed Congress Recess Messing Up More Than Politician Schedules

Posted August 22, 2017
The Schedule Of Congress Is Impacting Schedules Of Doctors

The month of August is usually vacation time for Congress. Besides being a time for rest and relaxation, it is also a good time for politicians to have plastic surgery performed away from the eyes of the public and the news media. However, the ability of politicians to visit their favorite plastic surgeon was put up in the air when Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell postponed their recess. Not to be outdone, House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy told members of the House to remain flexible about their travel plans.

Dr. Ariel Rad, a plastic surgeon based in D.C., recently told Vanity Fair, “Since the August recess has been delayed by this health-care bill in particular, I have a sort of a backlog of patients who have been waiting for the dates to become much more clear so that they can schedule. Now the end of August is particularly busy with congresspeople.”

Thankfully, the summer of 2017 has not been a complete loss for plastic surgeons in the political hub of the United States. Dr. Michael Somenek, a facial plastic surgeon, says “We’ve had to reschedule a few little things for people because they’re obviously not getting their recess in the timely manner that they anticipated. That being said, over the past six to eight months, we’ve really seen a surge in the non-surgical skin-tightening realm.”

In general, non-invasive procedures that are minimal in nature have been very popular in D.C. because politicians never know when they will need to go before TV news cameras. Dealing with the changing schedules of politicians has required surgeons in that area to be ready to juggle their schedules with little to no notice.  Some of the most requested procedures have been:

Many doctors have reduced the recovery time, in some cases, to as little as 24 hours (not including any bruising that can result). Patients can also do more extensive procedures such as a neck lift or a facelift if they have a week or more to devote to recovery time. However, most elected leaders don’t want it to seem obvious they had any work performed so they have changes made a little at a time.

Finally, doctors in the D.C. area help their political clients maintain their privacy by offering appointments before and after normal office hours. Some doctors also offer an escort in and of their office and private checkout services.
