Am I a Candidate for Eyelid Surgery?

Posted January 27, 2017

Eyelid surgery, also known as blepharoplasty, is performed on the eyelids to improve their appearance. The surgery can be performed on both eyelids, or just on the upper or lower eyelids, to enhance the appearance of the eyelids by removing fatty deposits and bags under the eyes. It also removes excess skin and wrinkles and rejuvenates droopy eyelids.

Good Reasons for Blepharoplasty

  1. Tighten droopy eyelids that obstruct vision
  2. Achieve a younger appearance by tightening the skin
  3. Fix loose and sagging muscle tissue
  4. Remove excessive fat and skin
  5. Erase the appearance of puffy eyes

Bad Candidates for Blepharoplasty

  1. Individuals with serious eye conditions
  2. Patients with medical conditions that can impair healing
  3. Smokers
  4. Patients with unrealistic expectations

Cost Expectations

The American Society of Plastic Surgeons reports that the average cost of blepharoplasty runs from $2800-$3200. This price does not include surgeon’s fees, surgical facility fees or anesthesia fees. The price varies depending on the geographic area where it is performed. Some eyelid surgery may be covered by insurance if the removed skin covering the eyelashes is deemed to be a medically necessary procedure.

Choosing the Type of Blepharoplasty Surgery

When it comes to having eyelid surgery, there are many types of blepharoplasty available to patients and they include:

  • Lower Eyelid Blepharoplasty – Performed on the lower eyelids and mainly used to modify eye bags as well as improve the appearance of wrinkles around the eyes.
  • Double Eyelid Surgery – This is also known as “Asian blepharoplasty” due to its popularity among Asian patients. The surgery creates a crease in the upper eyelid and results in a double-lidded appearance
  • Upper Eyelid Surgery – Mainly performed to address functionality issues such as loss of elasticity that causes sagging eyelids.

Risks and Complications

Patients should enter any surgery fully aware of any potential risks and complications. Some of the most common risks and complications of eyelid surgery include:

  1. Swelling and bruising
  2. Eye dryness
  3. Sensitivity to bright lights
  4. Difficulty closing the eyes
  5. Temporary change in vision
  6. Scarring

Recovery Information

Following the surgery, lubricating ointment and cold compresses will be applied to the treated area. There might be some swelling, irritation, bruising and dry eyes in the first few days after the procedure but these conditions will resolve over time. They can also be controlled with pain medication. Patients should practice sun protection and wear sunglasses that are darkly tinted during the healing process.

Eyelid Surgery Results

As long as patients follow the post-op instructions from their doctor, the final results from blepharoplasty will be long-lasting. While the final results can appear within several weeks, patients should be aware that it can take up to a year for the incision lines to disappear. The final results should give patients a smoother and better-defined appearance to the eyelids as well as a rejuvenated appearance in areas surrounding the eyelids.
