5 Reasons Why Plastic Surgery Is Not Shameful

Posted July 18, 2016

Plastic surgery is often seen as wrong or something that people should be ashamed of undergoing. The popularity of plastic surgery continues to grow with 15.6-million cosmetic procedures performed in the United States as recently as 2014. Instead of judging those who choose to undergone plastic surgery, here are some reasons to stop shaming patients who elect to have plastic surgery:

  1. There might be a medical reason for it – There are many people who undergo plastic surgery due to medical issues they were born with or scarring from an accident. They don’t have surgery for vanity reasons. Instead, they have it to fix issues that will improve their health and way of life,
  2. It’s none of your business – The fact that someone decides to have plastic surgery is a private matter between that person and family and friends. As harsh as it sounds, your opinion of their decision does not determine whether or not it was a good idea. Don’t judge others when it comes to the decisions they make regarding their appearance.
  3. You have likely made changes in your appearance – What changes have you made in your appearance in the past? Have you gotten a tattoo or pierced your belly button? While these changes might not be as major as a surgical procedure, they are changes that you made to improve your appearance in the eyes of yourself and others.
  4. You do not work for the “Body Police” – The decision to have plastic surgery is rarely a group decision that involves the input of many people. Respect the choices of others and accept them as they are or as they want to be in the future.
  5. It’s here to stay – Plastic surgery is now an established part of our society and shows no signs of slowing down anytime in the near future. It’s an accepted part of daily life in the medical world and is discussed routinely among medical professionals as well as people from all walks of life. As plastic surgery often serves to make people feel better about their appearance and more positive about life in general, there doesn’t seem to be any reason to shame those who have a procedure. Until you know the reasons people decide to have surgery, don’t jump to conclusions that they are “vain” or “shallow”. The reasons behind the surgery are their own and should be respected by others.
