5 Common Reasons to Undergo Otoplasty

Posted March 15, 2016

One of the hardest things for anybody to endure is teasing or bullying by other people. While there are a variety of reasons people tease each other, one of the most common targets is making fun of the appearance of a person. Kids and adults who have prominent and oversized ears are often the target of taunting from others. Thankfully, there is a cosmetic surgery procedure known as otoplasty that can resize, reshape and make the ears more proportional. Here are some of the most common reasons that people choose to undergo otoplasty:

1.      Overly Prominent Ears – There are many people who are simply born with ears that stick out and protrude greatly. The size or prominence of the ears might not be obvious until the ears have reached their full size when a child is seven years old. If the ears are prominent to the point that it makes the child uncomfortable with his or her appearance, ear pinning can be performed to flatten the ears against the head. This process serves to change the overly prominent appearance of the ears and it also gives the patient more confidence in their appearance. While this procedure is normally performed on children, it can also be performed on teenagers and adults who are unhappy with the appearance of their ears and have used hats and hairstyles in the past to cover their ears.

2.      Ears That Are Not Proportional With Other Facial Features – The ears can actually seem larger than they really are when compared to the other features on the face. Also, the ears might not appear symmetrical with each other on the head. Having a surgeon reposition one ear, or even both ears, can help create a balanced appearance between the two ears as well as make them appear symmetrical when viewed by others.

3.      Injuries – An injury suffered in the past can be the reason for prominent ears or an asymmetrical appearance of the ears. Also, some patients might have undergone a surgical procedure in the past and were not happy with the final results. This can lead them to choose otoplasty to repair and revise the work done during the previous procedure.

4.      Obstructed Ear Canal – There are some rare cases where the poor shape of an ear can cause a patient to suffer hearing loss. While this is certainly more than an aesthetic problem, it is rather easy to solve the problem by removing muscular blockages and restoring more of the patient’s ability to hear.

5.      Droopy Ears – The ears can begin to sag as people get older. Once they start to hang lower on the head, they begin to draw unwanted attention. Many patients elect to have the unwanted drooping corrected by having the otoplasty perform a structural lift. Once the ears are lifted, the patient will enjoy a normal appearance.

The best way to utilize otoplasty to help a patient should be determined during a consultation between the doctor and the patient. The final decision is often determined by the type of aesthetic problem that the patient wants addressed by the procedure. Generally speaking, scoring and sparing of the cartilage is best used when the issue is ear protrusion. On the other hand, ear reduction is a good option when addressing the overall size of the ears. No matter what the reason is for the otoplasty procedure, the majority of patients are happy with the results. Both younger and older patients are often relieved to have the appearance of their ears changed and enjoy gaining a new level of self-confidence about their appearance.
